If we valued black art, Kendrick Lamar’s Pulitzer would have been for literature

If we valued black art, Kendrick Lamar’s Pulitzer would have been for literature. When will the education system wake up to black creativity?

I can’t help thinking that the Pulitzer prize committee missed a trick in their award to the rapper Kendrick Lamar this week. If they had given him the Pulitzer for literature rather than for music it would have elevated his artform and sent a message that would have resonated around the world: that rap is a legitimate form of poetry and should be put on a par with, and treated with the same deference as, Shakespeare and Wordsworth.

Let’s be honest, Kendrick Lamar, Stormzy, BBK and Giggs have a greater impact and more relevance today than all the literary “greats” wandering lonely as a cloud on some dusty bookshelf in some crusty corner, waiting to be forced down the school curriculum gullets of young people.

If the Pulitzer people had only bitten the bullet and done the equivalent of what the Nobel committee did for Bob Dylan and rock lyrics when they said, “You know what? We’re going to get dissed and ridiculed for even putting Dylan on the same level as John Steinbeck, but what the heck. Let’s just do it and take the flak.” Who knows what the dividend would have been for wider society?

To be politically correct when lusting for ‘inclusive’, if those targeted for inclusion cannot reach a minimal standard of excellence then lower the standards until the doofuses can be included as meeting ‘the standard’.

A greater racist methodology cannot be devised! Democrats own it ...

There is a difference between writing fiction and writing songs. . . . I write neither

I've written both.

In spite of the common misconception that the popular song is purely the product of innate talent and some fortunate inspiration from the ether, it is a craft. It takes hard work to write a decent song, and nobody worked harder than Bob Dylan.

That being said, a brilliant popular song is like a brilliant chapter in a book. A novel is a more substantial undertaking, and while Bob Dylan reached the pinnacle of skill in lyric writing, I suspect the decision to award him the Pulitzer Prize in literature was influenced by sentimentality and the desire by Boomers to enshrine their juvenile rebellion -- of which Dylan is perhaps the most beloved symbol.

As for rap music, we used to compose chants of similar quality and character. When we were ten years old.

Hedly Lamar.

+++++++

Hedy Lamarr was, IMHO, one of the most beautiful woman to EVER walk the face of the earth. One of the great beauties of all time.

No way, I’m just wondering what sort of political interference allowed his song to beat out Cardi B. For sure, she’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but at least she gives voice to something real and isn’t so derivative like Lamar is.

Personally, I think Tyrone Green was robbed....

Images by Tyrone Greene ...
Dark and lonely on the summer night.
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
Watchdog barking - Do he bite?
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
Slip in his window,
Break his neck!
Then his house
I start to wreck!
Got no reason —
What the heck!
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
C-I-L-L ...
My land - lord ...
Def!

It’s pretty obvious that the fix is in to elevate Kendrick Lamar, but the thing is that people who “fix things” are philistines who just want to dictate to people what everyone is supposed to like. If it is on their own dime, like the rich people who commissioned art throughout the ages, and in this way kept artists from starving, that is one thing, but this is not that. This is an attempt by people with doubtful taste trying to inflict this particular agenda item on the rest of us. (Kendrick Lamar, Nobel Prize for Literature, or whatever? Check!)

Art isn’t always pretty, and goodness knows Cardi B paints a gritty picture, but at least that picture is real and at least her work is an example of art reflecting life.

Kendrick Lamar did not deserve to beat Cardi B. for best rap song which started this engineered-feeling run of his.

Was “Subterranean Homesick Blues” the first “rap” song?

If (c)rap is a form of poetry, so are Hallmark cards and jingles for denture adhesive.

I appreciate and agree with your analysis.

Consider this as well: As for rap music, we used to compose chants of similar quality and character. When we were ten years old

Yes, and the subject matter less violent and more worthwhile.

I forgot to mention that Hedy was a pretty bright gal also. She first suggested the idea of using a frequency hopping radio system as a defense against jamming. And was awarded a patent on the idea.
