A couple of books, both on WWII in the Pacific.
“The Conquering Tide: War in the Pacific Islands, 1942-1944”, by Ian Toll, and Hornfischer’s “The Fleet at Flood Tide: America At Total War in the Pacific 1944-45”.
Must reads for those of you who watched Victory At Sea like I did and had no idea where all those battles were taking place.
What’s interesting to me is learning how and why American strategy developed, how the Fast Carrier Task Force became the most potent weapon in the Pacific, why certain islands were chosen to fight over, the role of the B-29 in strategic planning. And all of the personalities of the admirals and generals involved.
And for those looking for a great read, even if you are not all that interested in military history, Hornfischer’s “The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors” is it. The astounding American victory at the Battle Off Samar, which someone ought to turn into a movie.

“If this book is anything close to what I’ve heard, I think Hoover will go down as perhaps the smartest and most underrated U.S. president of all time.”
That wouldn’t surprise me. He gets unfairly blamed for the Great Depression. Hoover had been an immensely successful businessman before entering politics. A mining engineer IIRC.

Mostly.
Hastings appears to be a battle between English Vikings and Norman Vikings.
And it happened after the English Vikings defeated the Danish Vikings.
Hard to keep up with it.
