INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR)It was a frustrating evening for passengers of flight 3708 when a woman on board refused to check a suitcase that was too large for carry-on regulations.
Crew members of the flight, which were headed from Indianapolis to Newark, asked the woman to check her bag, but she refused. (snip) the passenger became verbally abusive toward the crew. She was then asked to leave the aircraft, which she also refused to do.
All passengers were asked to deplane while the crew waited for this one woman to disembark.
The flight was delayed multiple times because of the incident. It was originally scheduled to leave at 7:05 p.m. but didn't take off until 12:17 a.m. A different aircraft was used to get all other passengers to their destination.
King and United Airlines sent this statement to WTHR:
"A customer on United Express flight 3708 from Indianapolis to Newark was asked to check her oversized bag, and she refused to do so. She became verbally abusive to the crew and they asked her to leave the aircraft. The customer refused and all customers were asked to deplane. To minimize the inconvenience to our customers, we arranged for a different aircraft to make the flight from Indianapolis to Newark as soon as possible last night."
Jason Kowalsky, a passenger on the flight, said the entire situation was "frustrating." Kowalsky said he and other passengers sat in the terminal for more than 4 hours with little information and no food or drink options because food vendors were closed by that time.
Kowalsky said, "They could have handled it much better. The fact that one person can hold us hostage is outrageous."
He also said a passenger suffered a medical condition while passengers waited in the terminal.
Kowalsky shared this video with WTHR:

The airlines have seen all the negative coverage and won’t go through this again. I would go and expect this to be a routine thing...at least once a week in the US where you get told to exit the plane stand-by for two to three hours waiting on the ‘problem-child’ to come off, with their bags to be removed.
There needs to be a national listing that you get on after showing this childish behavior, and forbids you for three years from another flight.
Jordan Peterson has made the observation that interaction between males (if things get tense) always carries the implicit threat of violence. Which helps to keep things calm in many (but not all) cases. Because both males realize that "the other guy could start swinging". And so there is an effort to avoid that outcome.
But it's different with women. The rule is that you cannot attack women. And women know this. And so some women will push, and push, and push without letup. They feel unstoppable and invincible. Because they KNOW you won't start swinging. And that's how they get totally out of control.
I genuinely loathe passengers who insist on bringing in oversized bags into the plane to try and cram in the carry-on area.
Not just arrogant.
Its easier to hide weapons in a big bag.
It was a safety issue.
There have been crazy women dragged off recently, at least one.
Hard to tell from the video, but may have been a Dindunuffin.
No name and no pics.
Clue...............................
Permanent no-fly.
More afraid of a lawsuit by this woman than taking care of their other customers. After a minute or two, Indy Airport Police should have been on the plane, escorting her off and putting her in cuffs.
So f*cking selfish to ruin other people’s lives over a damn bag. Someone on that plane could have been trying to get somewhere to see a dying, loved one and this is allowed.
It would be great if every other passenger filed a class action lawsuit on the woman and the airline. No acceptable reason for what she did and what the airline allowed to happen.
Can’t airport security or the local police help in a situation like this?
Wow that’s ridiculous.
Absolutely. If the bag would not fit in the overhead bin, and she would not let them check it, what did she expect?
Because of videos showing people being dragged from planes
Hope I never have to fly on another commercial aircraft.
Close up of screenshot from video of action.
Appears to be official asking passenger to check bag or exit, on left. Cannot be sure who is passenger refusing to comply, on right.
United Express normally flies regional jets, not what we consider a “big” plane.
My laptop bag will not fit under the seat on RJs so it has to go into the bins above. Sometimes if I have it overstuffed or not arranged well, it won’t even fit into those bins.
It’s the main reason I now fly mostly Southwest. The bigger Boeing jets make flying easier.
Because while there are those metal gages for suitcase size, no on makes you run your bag through them before boarding. The system mostly works on the honor system.
Police should have been summoned, the woman arrested, and the plane could have taken off less than 30m late.
Yep. Again.
I’ll take “Ghettopotamus” for $1000.00 Alex.
Hoping for a payday like that doctor that refused to leave.
Those of you who supported him — this is on you. This and all the similar future events.
