NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center says numerous people saw a very bright streak early Friday. A statement and video posted on Facebook says an analysis shows the meteor was first seen at an altitude of about 58 miles (93 kilometers) above rural Turkeytown, which is about 80 miles (129 kilometers) northeast of Birmingham.

The office estimates a small asteroid about 6 feet (1.8 meters) in diameter then broke apart about 18 miles (29 kilometers) above the town of Oak Grove. It was at least 40 times as bright as the full moon at one point.

I was suspended and am still on probation here because
I posted a pic of a bunch of hyena wearing muzzles being being walked by Africans.

Cant confirm it, but EEE took exception and was the last person I posted to before the the disciplinary action.

I would advise caution when posting to him.

No personal attacks, no racism.

It started as an asteroid and became a meteor when it entered the atmosphere.

But the article said "the meteor was first seen at an altitude of about 58 miles (93 kilometers) above rural Turkeytown... a small asteroid about 6 feet (1.8 meters) in diameter then broke apart about 18 miles (29 kilometers) above the town of Oak Grove."

It was a meteor at 58 miles high, then became an asteroid at 18 miles high.

The male news idiot said, "...Now they're working to see if any of the meteorites from the asteroid made it to the ground."

Here's a news flash: Any "meteorites" that didn't make it to the ground ARE NOT METEORITES.

Maybe it had a dual identity.

LOL. You know me very well. Honestly, ever since that fireball has been in the local news, that song has been playing in my head ever since:) If you didn’t see my post to dfwgator, I wished Ian Gillan a Happy Birthday today. He’s 73. 😳

It was a meteor that identified as an asteroid. It's a transteroid!

It was an asteroid when it was in space and was about 6 ft. in diameter, it became a meteor when captured by earth’s gravitation and was seen at 58 miles, and broke apart about 18 miles up.

The vids taken from ground level are exciting to watch, it really looks like the fireball is about to crash into the ground, then, pffft, gone!

My apologies to all on this thread for my ill-advised comments about the wonderful people of Alabama.

You appear to be drunk-posting. Never a good idea on FR, but definitely explains a lot.
