WEEKLY GARDENING THREAD OCT. 12, 2018
freerepublic | OCT. 12, 2018 | greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.

Greetings from Mo. It was a cool rainy day here. We are at 42 degrees here at the one acre ranch. Just got in from trip to St. Louis for Dr. appt. Good to go for another year I hope. Got to stop one of my meds.

Augie, really enjoyed the pics on the last thread. Quite a nifty project there.

We are supposed to get down to freezing on Monday, so this weekend, I'll chop off the tomato branches that still have green cherry tomatoes and blossoms and stick them in a pot of dirt. Hoping that some will develop roots.

This has worked in the past, and a lot of the blossoms have wound up developing into tomatoes during the winter. Lemon tree and aloe vera and herbs are in the green house.

I will be planting the garlic and rye this weekend - later than usual. Raised beds are finally cleared of tools from hubby's projects, but will not do too much this weekend, because I have to finish taxes. Ugh.

Hope all is well with you. Prayers up for all. God Bless

It seems to me, that we went straight to brown this year. We’ve had loads of leaves, but not the fall color we usually get.

Very concerned about our butternut tree. Usually our best producer for nuts. This year=zero, and it lost all the leaves before the other trees had hardly begun.

The oak tree over my house did exactly as you describe.

The maples are beautiful though.

I wonder what’s going on?

I didn’t get my garlic in yet either. Going to try and get the raised bed ready this weekend though.

I’m hoping that the raised bed are dry enough tomorrow to get it done.

Everything outside has frozen already. The two tomatoes indoors in containers seem to be doing well. Forecast for this weekend has a cold front coming with 3-5 inches of snow each day and a low temp Saturday of 12F and Sunday 7F.

Planting bulbs for spring bloom....daffodils, crocus.

Picking my last watermelon tomorrow. Should be nice and "chilled". We're in the high 40's for a couple nights and high 50's during the day.

Will take a ride for photos of the trees for my winter paintings.

You always have to dream. I would love to do something like this. I can no longer do it but maybe I can work something out so a future generation could.

Nebraska retiree uses earths's heat to grow oranges in snow (Title). Amazing what a retired postal worker, a dream, an idea, and determination can do. Financed it himself, initially at least, because ag colleges and the like said it couldn't be done or impractical.

I did some more canning this week.

16 lbs of untrimmed tri tip.

I trimmed off the fat and got 5 lbs of rendered fat that I poured into soap molds to make it easier to use later. It’s bagged up in the freezer. I’ll use it in soap and cook with it.

I saved the cracklings to make beef hash with and made 18 pints of roast. No waste at all! Took about 12 hours.

Next week I want to do some chicken and gravy fixings and strawberry jam.

Eastern Washington.

Nice!

I’ve got a thing for Idaho now. I’d like to retire there.

My daughter and I went there over the summer to look at U of I Moscow. We hopped the border to hit some thrift stores in Pullman, Wa.

Eastern Washington is looking good too.

Has the smoke cleared from all the fires yet?

I still have to build one. I did a couple kind of funky hugelkultur deals last year, not very tall. One has been compacted because it’s in the only spot where I could hang the clothesline... But I want to put a frame up and fill it with nice loose topsoil, manure, compost and mulch, fertilize it real good and plant garlic.

I was thinking about garlic on the outside and spinach and chard on the inside using garlic as a barrier against snails and the like.

My other hugel bed got really dry in the summer and I think that’s why I had BER on the San Marzanos. I tried calcium, powdered milk, milk, etc. I think the ground just got too dry.
