How many here watched it live?
Right, but the record Secretariat set that day wasn’t just for the Belmont, but for the mile and a half distance on any track, which is even more impressive. The record for the mile and a quarter (the Kentucky Derby distance) is held by Spectacular Bid, who set it in 1980 at the Strub Stakes. That one looks to be unbeatable as well. And the record for the even mile was set by Dr. Fager in ‘68. Amazing that all three records still stand.
But Secretariat’s Belmont was the most impressive race ever run, given the circumstances.
Not just the Belmont but all three triple crown races, Secretariat still holds the record for the fastest time
************
That’s just unbelievable.
Not only a Triple Crown winner, but holds the records for the fastest times at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, & Belmont.
I had no idea, thanks.
Another thing that’s amazing, is we live in an era where track times from earlier eras have been blown away by modern athletes when it comes to human beings racing.
Yet, these records for race horses from 1968, 1973, & 1980 still stand.
Amazing horse and race!
Only wish it was free capusella making the call. He would have said: they are not going to catch the champ today!!
It’s my favorite sports photograph, of the jockey Ron Turcotte looking back at the field.
I did. When I was 14 years old…
Well, live on TV
I live right down the road from “The Meadow” where Big Red was born and trained.
“Secretariat has accomplished the unbelievable task of breaking the mile and a half record by 2 3/5 seconds (2:24).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yup... and in the end, it was calculated that he beat Twice a Prince by 31 lengths who came in about 4 1/2 seconds later. At that speed, Secretariat would have beat the previous recordholder by about about 18 lengths....
Wonderful race. “It was like the Lord was holding the reins. Secretariat was one of His creatures and He whispered to him, ‘Go.’ And that horse really went. It was really an almost supernatural experience. It really was.”
This photo and Chic Anderson's call "he's moving like a TREMENDOUS machine!". Both are epic.
Wow!
There is a PIAPS joke in this somewhere
I remember it. What a magnificent beast he was. I adored Secretariat. And I like his owner, groom, jockey, and trainer. What a fun time of life that was.
One of my regrets is not visiting Claiborne farms after he retired. Would have loved to have seen him up close.
From https://www.derbymuseum.org/Blog/Article/324/Secretariat-s-Heart:
"The average Thoroughbred's heart weighs about 8.5 lbs. Secretariat's heart weighed nearly three times that number! ... Secretariat's big heart likely contributed to his stamina on the racetrack."
Yep. I watched with my parents when I was 18. Great stuff!
It was the greatest sporting event of all time by the greatest, most unassuming athlete of all time.
Thanks for the remembrance
