I’ve heard this basic story before. Still don’t know if the writer means speed of sound in water or speed of sound someplace else, like, oh, say air? For him to see/hear that he had to have his ear muffs on or maybe watching a strip chart recorder to have a notion of time and distance. His “research” had to already be listening to something outside since there’s nothing otherwise to “hear” inside a nuke. This genius can’t reveal how he observed the speedy thing without also revealing what he was testing/observing/operating. I still have one hand on the BS flag until we get a couple specifics. Testing hypersonics underwater comes to mind but there is nothing quiet about that bit of hocus pocus?

A super cavitating object in seawater (how to get things to go fast underwater) is within an air bubble so its actual speed is somewhere around the speed of sound in air, depending on pressure.
The bubble is created by diverting a fraction of the exhaust through the tip of the object. Russia has some torpedo type weapons that do this and is probably what did in the Kursk (one lighting off inside). It’s aimed fire though, not currently maneuverable IIRC...
The best idea I’ve heard with respect to those is to put them in concrete submarines that sit on the bottom and fire at passing targets.

No, but that was developed at least a decade ago.
The only thing I can noodle up in my head for exceeding the speed of sound under water is going to have a conventional energy requirement far in excess of that that the device could carry and not be limited to 10’s of feet +-. If we get science fictiony/alien tech, then maybe if you were running something Alcubierre like we could get there (still Civ I + type stuff) but it would probably only make a popping noise as it went in and out of space underwater...
Or, it’s demonically powered... (seriously, if we’re groping around in the technological dark and living in the times we do we can’t discount stuff like that...)
