Boy are you right about that one...when I hear people whine and complain about the rain here, I just laugh to myself...if our rain discourages folks from moving here, I am all for it...

I am really shocked to see how this whole area has gotten built up since we first moved here...The county we are in, Thurston County, has been one of the fastest growing counties in the state, and also in the country....and I am not happy about it...

I guess that is why I just love to up into the mountains...get away from all the people and the building boom...

Habs, we were living in North Carolina when Mt. St. Helens went off, and I had no idea that we would be, within a few short years, living near there...

In 1985, we went up to Mt. St. Helens, and honestly, the landscape looked like something from Mars....and seeing thousands of trees just flattened like toothpicks was so eerie...and there were still wreckages of cars, that had been totaled, alongside of the road...it was quite the experience....

That was ash habs, and it covered parts of eastern WA inches deep. And I was out bike riding with the club when St Helens blew..Didn' know about it till I got home...lol...

We never got any where I live. The prevailing winds blew it into eastern WA and beyond. It got inches deep on highways, streets, houses, you name it, It was a real mess in places for awhile. Suck into aircleaners on cars and plug them up. Some would get by and that wasn't good for the engine. Or your lungs.....

Well, friends, Mr. Dizzy is again rubbing my legs, and whining, meaning its time for me to leave and give attention to that big fuzzy kitty cat...I think what he really wants is some more of his catnip...he wants to be stoned...

Westy, when we went up to St Helens in 1985, we went up as far as the road would take the car...then we parked and climbed a huge pile of stairs, to get up as high as we could....

I remember the wind was blowing, and ash was all over us...by the time we got home, my whole head felt so yucky with all that ash on my scalp and in my hair...

But the view we had, was well worth all that nasty ash being everywhere...

I guess I really should not claim that the ash as nasty....after all, using that ash, has allowed glassblowers to make some fabulous pieces of art glass...we have several pieces, and it looks and shines like no other art glass....something special about that Mt St Helens ash being in the mix for the glass....

And doesnt that ash, eventually provide nutrients for the earth...I know after the devastation of the eruption, people thought nothing would grow there again...but nature provided, and slowly but surely the earth is renewing and rejuvenating and things are growing again...

Thamks for telling me about the Jokes not showing - I can see them but some people can't. We seem to be having a problem with Yahoo in the last three or four days.

How flat is the ground there, and what is(are) the tallest object(s) around? As the clouds move over the ground, they continually build up a static charge, two to be picky. A positive charge in the cloud, and a negative charge along the ground. (The negative charge follows along like a shadow.) When the charges get intense enough, the shortest (or most conductive) path is occupied by the spark. (Dust storms out west sometimes have lightning, or so I have been told. Anything moving actively enough can produce enough static to create a spark. Snowstorms up this way sometimes have lightning, though I haven't seen it myself.. yet.)

The dryness in desert or scrubland adds to the static. (Poofy hair days!) Like stated in an earlier posting, Lightning is twice as hot as the surface of the sun, yet only as thick as a pencil. If you live in a spot that tends to act like a bowl, keeping out humidity, then lightning will be interesting around there. (Ball lightning doesn't follow known 'rules' for lightning. It just does uniquely odd things in and of itself. Hurricane Gloria went through near here in '85. Ball lightning blew a tree in the front yard in half. Watched it from my bedroom window. Truly odd, yet magnificent stuff.)
