Why is the Heartland Liberal?

Posted on 11/07/2002 4:25:32 AM PST by Turgidson

Does anyone have any idea where the liberal streak in South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota comes from? Having spent time in those places, the people don't seem like that. Yet S.D. produces the likes of Tom Daschle and George McGovern. How? Do they start political careers differing from their final liberal state, mutated by national politics? Or is there something pathological about farm issues in those states that correlates more with a liberal mentality?

In South Dakota, there are a lot of indians who vote (dead or alive).

Beastiality rights? Man/animal marraige rights? If the same sex can get away with it, why not a man and his favorite ewe?

It's the free handouts. Little do they realize it's the left wing and the greenies that are really are their long term enemies.
Costs to farmers wouldn't be so high if the right wing was calling the shots, but right now they're so burried in debt the freebies have to feed them.
Wait until they're told their land can't be used because of a "protected" field mouse, a bug, or some kind of weed!

They vote for the hand that starves them.

FREE STUFF!!!!!!!!

Democrats have been the party of free stuff. Vote for us and we give you freee stuff.

It is not just brining home the pork. It is spreading it around.

When bush said in the 2000 debate I want to give everyone a tax cut rich and middleclass , everyone who pays taxes. The independents heard they were getting money. In SD those who have latched onto the FREE STUFF bandwagon have no concept of where it comes from, only that they are getting FREE STUFF.

You have to realize that modern liberalism is the idealogical descendant of the 19th Century Republican party. Essentially pro-Union, pro-Washington central power. Even the Abolitionists of Lincoln's time would be the multiculturalists of the today. The North is still distinctive from the South even to this day. The Republican party is becoming the party of the South because it stands for pro-Christian, pro-freedom values, and less about central power. The upper-Midwest is very much German and Scandinavian descended. These peoples have always been progressive in their thinking, and not necessarily Christian-centered in their worldview. The maintain some Christian ideals, but Germanic peoples have always held on to pagan holidays and rituals. America's modern version of Christmas and Halloween are this way. Northerners basically invented America's public school system, Prussian-based army out of the Civil War era, and are more inclined to material industrial production than say, the agrarian South. Really very little has changed in Northern vs. Southern culture.

If it weren't for a libertarian running, SD would have had a republican Senator.
