Pick which one you think is right. I'm interested in hear what you think.
TOPICS: History
KEYWORDS: athens; godsgravesglyphs; greece; sparta
My vote is Athens, we got our concept of Democracy there, Sparta was an oligarchy.

Today's Everyman would consider Athens an oligarchy as well.

I suppose you'll be asking us next ,"Who was the greater philosopher: Aristotle? Or Plato?" Followed by a gushing summary for Plato, a hearty recomendation of Kant, and plaintive cry to join the DNC. :-)
Hie thee, RAT! :-D

I tend to think that we are closer to Athens than Sparta, though I don't believe the Founding Fathers had either city in mind as a model for how things should work.

Actually I was just wondering, I've been reading the "Peloponnesian War" by Thucydides.
True that Athens wasn't a very good democracy, but still a democracy in theory.
If you want the Philospher Question you have to include Descartes, He is great.

I'm not a philospher so I can't explain it very well. If I had my Rand books handy, I'd offer some quotes that would address your question. Sorry I can't do better than that, but I had I gut feeling that we were in for a line of seemingly innocent questions and that the discussion would eventually bring us to the doors of the DNC.

I agree with you about Rome.
And I also agree with BradyLS about F_L_A. I 'feel' an aura of DNC here. Either that, or he/she really IS from Florida, judging by the spelling in the headline.

Ditto. I admire the Romans more than I do the Greeks.
