Dressed in a floor-length cape, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon was dubbed the king of peace at a coronation ceremony in the Dirksen Senate Office Building attended by several members of Congress.
Moon is the founder of the Unification Church currently known as The Family Federation for World Peace and Unification.

"...on the receiving end of history's biggest smear job..."
I think he does a pretty good job of that himself.

There has to be more to this story. Congress does some pretty stupid things, but 81 of them attending a ceremony to crown Moon "King of Peace" just doesn't pass the smell test.
If nothing else, politicians have a very good sense of self preservation, and going to a cult meeting with Moon isn't part of that.
Between Rev. Moon and L. Ron Hubbard, Rev. Al and Rev. Jesse, how much money is that exactly?
Before you judge him, don't you think you should at least hear him out?
I just watched the Unification Church promo video about this event (linked from that Blog site mentioned in this thread).
It seems very likely that the congressmen who went to this were roped into an "Ambassadors for Peace" Awards Ceremony. After the awards were given out, it appears the program shifted into Moon-mode and the awarding of the "King of Peace" award.
For most congressmen, this surely was a bait & switch operation, much like the "anti-drug" rallies and such put on by the Church of Scientology.
How to get congressmen at your next function?
1) Donate Money
2) Mention high-profile "world leaders" coming to your function
3) Mention free expensive meal
4) Casually mention the chance to meet "industry leaders" at the event who might be good people for the congressman to meet/greet/solicit
5) Emphasize "great cause!" such as "World Peace Awards"
6) Avoid mentioning the Unification Church.
Voila! Tacit endorsement!
According to the video of the event, it appears that none of those phrases was uttered in English. Unless there were translators or subtitles on a video board, the room was full of people who didn't understand what was being said. Hilarious.
I wasn't born yesterday. I've heard.
Every American is free to practice religion of their choosing.
"We have a saying in China, 'It doesn't really matter what I say here because none of you speak Chinese'".
Of course, the part in quotes was in the subtitles.
Not always.
Editorial Reviews From Book News, Inc. In 1984, investigative reporter Sherwood accepted a job with the Washington Times, which was owned and operated by the Unification Church, itself founded and led by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon who had just been convicted on federal charges of tax evasion and conspiracy and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Instead of the corruption, scandal, and hypocrisy Sherwood expected to uncover, be found a very different story--the story of how the American prosecutorial system can be abused to persecute a religion and its leader.Absorbing and sobering, October 18, 2002
A shocking example of how easily prejudice can run roughshod over fairness and basic decency. This account of a contemporary witchhunt reads like a novel. Its clear that Moon's real sin was being Asian, grabbing the loyalty of a lot of middle class white kids, preaching interpretations different from conventional Christianity and being a little too fired up about God, anti-communism and chastity for people's taste. This vividly chronicles how Moon was railroaded into jail. A little too detailed in parts, but good reading.
I suppose that makes a good excuse when they're questioned later.
Calling in markers from the '70's? Parties, videotapes, and stuff?
Certified by who? You?
If he's the King of Peace, Im Marie of Romania.
He claims to be the "Lord of the Second Advent", in order to complete the task in which Jesus failed. Moon states that there is no reason for Jesus to return, since Moon himself will usher in salvation.
Moon is a satanically deluded nutcase who blasphemes every time that he opens his mouth. He denies the perfection and diety of Jesus Christ, and elevates himself above the true Prince of Peace. As such, he is an antichrist, against which the New Testament gives numerous warnings.
Exactly. Ownership, influence, association. Pruden et al are at a disadvantage.
His contemporaries said precisely the same thing about Jesus.
The big problem with your argument is that Jesus Himself stated that His second coming would be accompanied by a demonstration of His glory:
"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. - Matthew 25:31-32 (ESV)
(See also, I Thessalonians 4:16)
As a result, Moon is an imposter, and denies Christ with every breath.
You really need to abandon your devotion to this deluded man and pledge your allegiance to the real Prince of Peace. Otherwise, you will find yourself, along with Moon, with the goats.
Hi Marie.
