The dreadful fallout from the re-election of George W. Bush continues apace. We'll be lucky if any of us are left alive at the end of the next four years to vote for Hillary. (That must be his plan!) The following article left me stunned and all but in tears: More New Yorkers At Risk For Hunger, Survey Finds.
More New Yorkers are having trouble putting food on the table, according to a survey by the Food Bank for New York City.
The study found 31 percent of city residents are “at risk for hunger,” finding it somewhat or very difficult to afford the food they need for their families – that’s up from 25 percent a year ago.
"Somewhat or very difficult to afford" food. This when a 10 lb bag of rice (enough food for about 6 months) costs $3.99 in the New York area!! A pound of dried black beans is 89 cents! Clearly, 31% of New Yorkers are not just poor, they are hopelessly desititute, prostrate, penniless and possibly already dead.

Might I suggest the Four Seasons. The food is exceptional, the service is top notch, and the prices are outrageous. Most of the patrons probably voted for John Kerry. It should be relatively easy for this establishment to feed the poor. In fact, let's give them a call and ask them if they should shutter their dining room and use it to feed the poor.
Of-course the absurdity of the study lies in the nature of the questions and the spin that is put on the answers. When you ask people, in a city where eating out and eating well is such a big part of ordinary life, whether they find it "somewhat or very difficult to afford food," an affirmative answer indicates nothing more than people's general disapproval of rising prices.
From this, the studiers conclude that those people are actually "at risk from hunger." And the media faithfully and uncritically trumpet this unanalyzed piece of garbage.
It would be amazing if it were not so par-for-the-course.
There isn't a food bank in the Western world that hasn't put out this exact same story for their particular city at least every six months.
Nothing to see here.
Lemme just say that the welfare queens living on subsidized project housing and getting food stamps look fat and happy to me.
I frequent a grocery store that has pretty low prices and decent quality food for staples. When I check out there are always people from the housing peoject nearby with 1 or 2 FULL shopping carts checking out. And i mean way over the top of the cart full.
They by all kinds of crap, lots of processed food, you name it, they eat it. But they are not starving, and guess what, they use Food Stamps (actually a Benefits Debit card) to charge all this food up.
Noone is starving.

Mrs LJ and self just got finished with a special diet for health (and weight loss, in my case) consisting of a special kind of bean and rice and spices. Totally kept us alive for 10 days, at a cost of about at most .75 a day.
Add a couple of vegetables for another $1, and voila! Cheap eats.
