A recent CNN poll compared former President Bill Clinton's job performance to that of President Bush, and, to no one's surprise, Bill Clinton won.
It reported that poll respondents favored Clinton by greater than 2-1 margins "when asked who did a better job at handling the economy (63 percent Clinton, 26 percent Bush) and solving the problems of ordinary Americans (62 percent Clinton, 25 percent Bush)."
That first number astounds me. By every conceivable measure, the economy is better today than it was when Clinton was re-elected. (Not that the president has much to do with it, anyway.) But it exposes another example the thought-shaping power of the media.
(Indeed, the next CNN paragraph was a link to a CNN video clip bearing the leading title; "Watch whether Americans are getting nostalgic for the Clinton era" -- where you will be informed of why you should be)
Having thus indoctrinated the reader with the Clinton News Network version of history, CNN presented its most astounding finding of all: two-thirds of respondents said George Bush has done 'more to divide the country' than Bill Clinton did!
(Although the next runner-up in the 'astonishing' category was the finding that the majority thought Bill Clinton was MORE HONEST than George Bush.)
Taking the long view of history, the issues plaguing the Bush administration; from the early recession to al-Qaeda, bin-Laden, North Korean nukes, Iraq, Iranian sponsorship of terrorism, nuclear proliferation, the rise of the Taliban, Chinese espionage. . . this list could go on all day . . . all flourished during the 1990's -- while Clinton looked the other way.
This isn't about the 'goodness' of George Bush. It amazes me that it is still necessary that point out that the truth isn't an endorsement of George Bush. It is either true or it is not. If it favors Bush, it isn't my fault.
What it is really about is the power of the media to bend people's minds completely out of all proportion to reality -- ie, 'nostalgia for the Clinton era.'
According to an astonishing new investigative report (released two days after CNN'S Clinton-Bush poll,) Bill Clinton had cut a deal with the manufacturer of the abortion drug, RU-486 before he had even assumed the Oval Office.
A document search uncovered a letter in the Clinton archives advising him to "start immediately to eliminate the barely educated, unhealthy and poor segment of the country," as a first step toward the Clinton 'miracle economy.'
The first step toward the 'elimination' of this potential economic drain was to kill them off using RU-486, a drug that the FDA had previously banned as 'too dangerous'. (RU-486 is a drug that causes a spontaneous abortion. It also can kill the woman who takes it.)
Judicial Watch released its report under the title, "The Clinton RU-486 Files." Using documents it obtained last February at the Clinton Presidential Library, Judicial Watch found that Bill Clinton's FIRST OFFICIAL ACT was to order the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the FDA to coordinate the marketing of RU-486.
Judicial Watch also revealed this chilling bit of correspondence from Ron Weddington, whose attorney wife worked for Roe in Roe v. Wade.
In urging the legalization of RU-486, Ron Weddington wrote in a Jan. 6, 1992, letter to Clinton. "Something's got to be done very quickly. Twenty-six million food stamp recipients [are] more than the economy can stand."
The "president-to-be" should "start immediately to eliminate the barely educated, unhealthy and poor segment of the country," Weddington added.
"Our survival depends upon our developing a population where everyone contributes," he wrote. "We don't need more cannon fodder. We don't need more parishioners. We don't need more cheap labor. We don't need more babies."
Further, "Weddington's ravings were not relegated to a file for unsolicited constituent correspondence," the Judicial Watch report notes.
"On the contrary, the Weddington letter is, chronologically and philosophically, the foundation document for the Clinton RU-486 files."
Within a month of Clinton's first directive, FDA Commissioner David Kessler met with the RU-486 manufacturer, the French pharmaceutical company Roussel Uclaf.
After that, official political, economic and diplomatic pressure from the U.S. government was exercised to make the drug available in the United States, the Judicial Watch report states.
In one confidential memo, former HHS Secretary Donna Shalala claimed that she and Kessler had personally changed the positions of the makers of RU-486 to market the pill in the U.S.
The French drugmaker offered to give the patent for the abortion drug regimen to the U.S. government for free so the French company would not be liable for damages if anything went wrong.
"Accepting the patent gift should be touted as a reproductive rights victory for American women and another example of the Clinton administration's commitment to deliver on its promises," Kevin Thurm, a deputy secretary with HHS, wrote in 1994.
But the deal would only go through if Clinton wrote an official letter requesting RU-486 'on behalf of the women of America'.
Clinton's official letter was dated May 16, 1994. In July, 1995, the FDA issued a health warning after it killed five women.
There is currently an effort in the House to force the FDA to withdraw approval of RU 486. It is called "Holly's Law" after the 18 year-old girl it killed in California.
Judicial Watch reported the Clinton administration pressured the FDA to circumvent the standard requirements for certifying a drug as "safe and effective" in order to rush the abortion regimen to market.
In summary then, the FIRST official act of the administration CNN is so nostalgic for was to set in motion a plan to "eliminate the barely educated, unhealthy and poor segment of the country" by cutting a deal with the French to knowingly market a dangerous drug as a 'safe alternative to abortion'.
It is worth noting that Clinton's LAST official act in office was to pardon 200 convicted criminals.
Including a cocaine trafficker, two guys who paid Hugh Rodham $400,000 for pardons for tax evasion convictions, and Marc Rich, an international fugitive financier wanted by Interpol for illegal arms trading.
Rich was pardoned after his wife, Denise Rich, made some seven-figure donations to the Clinton presidential library.
(Rich has since been implicated in post-pardon illegal arms trading with Iran. Go figure.)
But, according to CNN, the majority of the American people are 'nostalgic' for the Clinton years.

I had a friend at work declared a while back that when Clinton was prez, the country never ran so well. I had to lecture him on a few things about Clinton. But he is like millions of other Americans. They are wrapped up in their personal lives and have very little interest in national affairs. Even so my friend voted for Bush in the last election.
Ignorant...not stupid. However there are a fair share of the latter too. The simple fact is most Americans are wrapped up in their personal lives. Very few Americans pay attention to domestic and international affairs like Freepers. When the dust settles down the road, Bush will look much better. Clinton will not look so good. Because he wasn't so good.
Even more ironic when you consider that Clinton was busy sodomizing interns while Al Queda plotted 9-11.
Its easy to be popular when you avoid conflict. Clinton just kicked the can down the road.
