Democracy. Its a word that conjures different imagery for everyone, but in most cases includes something to do with America and her freedoms. The word Democracy has a lot of positive connotations associated with it.
It shouldnt. The United States of America is NOT a democracy, and thank God for it.
Folks, the word Democracy does not appear in the US Constitution or the Declaration of Independence. The Founders of our nation did this on purpose, as they did not found a democracy.

TOPICS: Education; Government; History; Politics
KEYWORDS: constitution; democracy; lamestreammedia; lies; media; msm; publicschools; republic
This is the first article I'm writing in a series of at least once-weekly articles discussing some of the lies that have been foisted on the public by the schools, the media, and our 'leaders' which have been widely accepted. I am going to start a Lies pinglist for people who are interested, and I'm hoping I'll get a significant number of people on it. If you want on or off this ping list, FRMail me.

I wish this had more about what a republic is than all the things that a democracy, and America, are not.

Although this topic is commented on frequently, probably every day, there are still an unlimited number of people who haven't got the point and some never will.

We have a republican system of government. However, that government is chosen (with the exception of the President and Vice-President) via democratic elections.
Saying that "America is a democracy" is a "lie" is going a bit far. It's more an issue of semantics than anything particularly dishonest. We are clearly not a pure democracy, but then again, no system that depends on elected representatives can be -- a pure democracy would have to require every decision to be made by public referendum, which is utterly impractical beyond a small community-sized population.

I almost considered doing something else for the first article in this series, but I thought it might be best to do something that more people might've been familiar with initially.
No doubt, there is not a shortage of thick skulls in this world. Many of them live in Washington.

Normally, I might agree with you hear, it's just that the media has elevated this to another level. They would love nothing better than to have this nation become a mobocracy, since they are the ones that tell the mob what to think. For this reason, they propagate this view that America is a democracy and take steps to try to make it into one. They are pushing something that simply isn't true for their own benefit. That makes it a lie in my book, but I suppose you're mileage will probably vary.

Democracy is a fairly safe topic to start the series. Not completely safe, nothing is completely safe. For instance, we all think we know what 'public' means, and also 'public property.' We also think we know what 'rights' are, and what the 'state' is. If it were so simple there wouldn't be entire shelves of books on these topics in the public library.

BTTT!
It's a fine column, I wish schools were required to teach that the United States is a constitutional republic and not at democracy. As it stands, the only time most children probably even hear the word republic is in the Pledge of Allegiance, and if the left has it's way, that will soon be disappearing.
Please add me to your ping list.

Oh, I understand where you're going. The mantra "America is a democracy" has led to generations of dumbed-down people who get all confused about how the Electoral College works, and why it was devised that way, as a prime example.
Of course, as far as I know, there is nothing else in history quite like the Electoral College. It is a rather peculiar institution, but, as we've seen in recent years, a vital one.
