The leader of a small group that ultimately wants to secede from the United States and form a Christian republic is preparing to move to the South Carolina county his organization has picked as a good base of operations.
Cory Burnell, leader of Christian Exodus, said he has found a job and is ready to move his family and operations by July from California to Anderson, in the state's northwest corner.
His family, which includes his wife and three children, will join more than a dozen other like-minded families already living in the Upstate region of South Carolina. Burnell said he expects another two dozen families in his movement to move to the area by 2008.
Christian Exodus aims to claim a voice in the South Carolina state government, and eventually secede from the United States to form its own separate Christian republic.
The group is a political organization, Burnell says, that also seeks to limit the power of the federal government. Burnell claims federal oversight of education, health and human services and housing and urban development violate the 10th amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
"It's totally illegal for the federal government to do it," said Burnell, a financial adviser. "Authority for those programs is on the state level. It cannot come out of Washington, it has to come out of Columbia."
Burnell's hope in encouraging other families to move to South Carolina is to put up candidates for public office who share his agenda and get them elected.
Burnell has said he picked South Carolina - and the Upstate area in particular - because there already were so many conservative Christians there.
At least I take heart that the last time some folks in South Carolina tried to secede, it didn't go too well for them.

Hmm...Anderson is best known for its excellent hospitality for Union prisoners during the War Between the States. Maybe this separatist group could enjoy the same hospitality.
Great. A nutbag disguised as a Christian
I’ve heard about this movement in South Carolina. Yep secession didn’t work out too well the last time.
There’s also something called the Free State Project, I think it’s called, where Libertarians are moving to New Hampshire to try to influence that state to adopt libertarian principles in government, and elect Libertarians to office there.
There’s also a movement in Vermont to secede. Not sure what their beef is.
And the southwestern US is supposed to become the state of Aztlan when enough Mexicans are there. I guess they would want to secede also.

I don’t blame these people at all.
Its too late to change America from within....the left has inflitrated the media, congress and all of our schools...
My intent at some point is to go off grid....vanish before things fall apart.

Andersonville is in Georgia. Anderson is South Carolina, near Greenville.
Its no different from the Libertarian Free State project. As long as he’s a productive member of society and doesn’t PO the IRS, I’m sure he’ll be a welcome addition to community. Best wishes to him.
Something like this tends to breed suspicion. Kinda like a little place called Islamberg.
Not saying I agree with this guy or his premise, but:

IMHO I am not sure that we ever would have had a nation if the original 13 colonies knew that they could not back out of the contract.

Folks down there won’t mind, as long as he accepts that the true religion in the area isn’t Christianity, it’s Clemson football. But they’re a tolerant lot, and won’t generally mind infidels in their midst. Unless they’re Gamecock fans. Then it’s jihad time.

Even I hate Gamecock fans....they win one game against us in like 14 years, they act like they've won a National Championship or even the SEC title. They haven't won a title since...well was Strom Thurmond even born then?
America may become balkanized if more movements like this gain traction.
So you would have Christians in South Carolina, Libertarians in New Hampshire, Howard Deanic types in Vermont, Mexican-Americans in the southwest, the gay community in San Francisco and other large cities, peace loving radicals in enclaves such as Berkeley, all wanting to break free and have their own autonomy.
