How Rush Limbaugh helped elect Barack Obama
firebrand blog ^ | November 8, 2008 | firebrand

Conservative radio buffoon Rush Limbaugh thinks of himself as an ace strategist and so he thought he was being extremely clever back in March when he launched "Operation Chaos" an effort to undermine frontrunner Barack Obama's chances in the fall election by prolonging the Democratic primary season and forcing Obama to deplete his resources early. Rushbo, accordingly, urged his conservative Republican listeners to take advantage of open primaries in many thats that allow non-Democrats to participate and vote for Hilary Clinton in order to drag the race out as long as possible. Brilliant eh? And how mischievous!

Unfortunately the Limbaugh his plan was too clever by half and has backfired.

DNC chair Howard Dean has talked about the importance of a "50 state strategy" for the past four years and Obama embraced the idea but it was the prolonged primary season that allowed Obama to implement it by virtue of necessity as the never ending race forced him to recruit ground organizers and campaign in red states that are usually flyover states for the Dems such as Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Indiana. When the fall campaign came around, polls showed Obama competitive in states that the Democrats had long written off as a result of his spring campaigning and allowed him to use ground organizations left over from the primary season in order to keeps those states competitive forcing McCain to campaign in states which should have been sure things for him. Moreover, Obama won North Carolina and Indiana and thereby assured himself the presidency thanks, in no small part, to Rush Limbaugh's efforts.

Since you applied the word to a great champion of American Freedom, Liberty, free enterprise and conservatism, what is your definition of buffoon?

Obama was easier to beat than Hillary would have been. Hillary would have beat McCain in a landslide because the dynamics of the vp pick would have been different. I don’t think he would have chosen Palin and he would have gotten wasted.

Hasn't anyone told you the results of the election yet?

Actually, this has been discussed here before.

AFAIK there’s no actual evidence that significant crossover registration occurred - the test would be to examine registration numbers in open primary states where there was not a strongly contested Republican primary, before and after operation CHAOS, and see if he could discern a consistent difference. But even then as complicated multiple factors were in play it would be hard to determine for certain that cause of any differences.

For what it’s worth, my guess is 1) that this was almost exclusively an intramural affair between the Democratic candidates and that CHAOS made little difference one way or the other and 2) on general principles it’s probably a good idea to avoid such efforts unless you can be reasonably certain of their outcome.

After the past two weeks, I think there should be at least a 30 day hold before a newbie can post a new thread. There is not a single story out there that someone else won’t find and post.

If the McCain campaign had used 1/10 the ammunition provided by Rush, there would have been a McCain victory on Nov 4. The so-called news departments at ABC, NBC, CBS and MSNBC contributed to Obama's victory. Terrorists funneling campaign contributions to the Obama campaign helped. William Ayers helped tremendously when he wrote Obama's autobiography. Oprah helped.

If Rush had been helpful to these fiends, they wouldn't be furiously drawing up plans to re-instate the "fairness doctrine."

Furthermore . . .

Rush at last drove the stake into the hearts of the Clintons. I, for one see that as a most glittering silver lining.

Imagine Bubba’s escapades when he had all the press but no job. Well, except for the job of the B variety.

I shudder at the thought of the national humiliation we’ve avoided. For now and for all time. Hillary can’t bother us no more unless O appoints her to the Supreme Court. And I can barely type at the thought of THAT.

Anyhow, O claimed his executive experience was in running a campaign. At which he seems adept enough.

Now, instead of boasting (notice how we never hear the word, “hubris” anymore, although we can barely see through the fog of hubris these days? For instance, the Navy put up a Mission Accomplished sign to welcome the Prez aboard that carrier. The mission of defeating the army of Saddam was, in fact, accomplished, and at that time, it seem a heckuva victory. But boy, Bush got more flak from that sign than Jeremiah Wright did for GD America.), anyhoooo, let’s see how the dude governs.

Ain’t no more voting present. Ain’t no more playing both sides of a decision and lying about it. Ain’t no erasing it from the Website. You’re out there now.

The folks out there with all the hubris maximus should spend some of that mouth energy on praying the guy can govern. Without the ability to blame Bush. Or McCain. Or the GOP.

I say the dudes ought to shut up until they see the guy put up.

I’m just sayin

ROFLOL, yeup, another Liberal whiner...there is not anything in this world that makes their sorry behinds happy. They get their Socialist Boob pushed into office, and they still whine.

Wait until he keeps the troops in Iraq, mandates they have to volunteer to do community service, but they will have to serve at least two years in the military in order to get their so called free health care and education.

Just wait....the list is long, but we really haven’t heard the whining like we will hear the whining once the real Obama emerges. ;)

Blowback? For what? Weakening Obama by extending the Democrat race and riling Hillary supporters?

You're either very dumb or a troll.

The purpose of OC was to get the dirt out on Obama in the spring because we knew it was NOT going to come in the fall. Unfortunately, the GOP decided not to use ANY of that information in the fall. They really screwed up because he has to stay far left and lay out more specifics in the spring of his leftward agenda than he would have like to put out. Again, the GOP let him run on his new centrist views.

There is probably something to the extended primaries helping Obama this fall through the build up of more state organizations, but he probably would have built them anyway after the primaries with his $650 million dollars.
