Online Video Games and simulated political violence(my first and probably only vanity)
me

Posted on 04/27/2009 1:19:09 PM PDT by Cailleach

I know, the first thing y'all will say is "don't waste your time with online video games, only ____'s (fill in various blanks) play them." OK. I am a 30 yr old female, and yes! I am a gamer! Was that step one? LOL

I play City of Heroes with my husband, and some other friends (all adults with lives, jobs and children). The game has a new program where people can make up missions, with entirely made up enemies, allies, etc. I stumbled upon the following a few days ago:

"I, president Barack Obama, give you the order to shot and kill all washed up republicans in sight. They have ruined our economy, they have started a needless war, and they must be put down. This is a top priority mission and you will be rewarded with your very own stimulus package if completed. good luck"

I did report the mission to the developers of the game, who emailed me back and told me that they didn't care. So, now I bring it to you. Maybe y'all know if it is something worth running with? For the record, that is not the only player invented mission involving this, but it is by far the worst. Among others, there are also ones sending you our to kill Former Pres. Bush (who appears clad in a pink speedo), and most of Congress. There was also a mission where Rush sent you out to arrest "Fancy Pelosi, Ned Kennedy and Will Clinton" with the help of "Annie Coulter"...

I hope I did this right...like I said, I've never made a vanity before. I don't plan to ever do it again, either, but this got me pretty fired up.

I don't think its a big deal. There are morons on the internet by the tens of millions. If you look hard enough you can find anything online.

did you email this to Michelle Malkin or Mike Reagan or Debbie Schlussel (sic). They sometimes post blog entries or write about stuff like that.

I would think Secret Service would like to know about this one actually.

Just heard back (after my 3rd report).

“I am escalating your petition to a Senior Customer Support Representative to further assist you. Please be aware, however, that there may be a delay in reviewing the issue, based on ticket volume at the time your ticket was submitted.

Someone will be in contact with you as soon as possible.”

LOL I think I’ve been sent to Limbo...

No, I have not shared this with anyone other than customer support and you guys. I wanted to get a second, third, 537th opinion that I was right to be disgusted...

the real question is, can you get someone to rewrite it the way it would actually happen?

Cailleach,

I play the same game and have not seen it. Are you sure it’s not part of their “Mission Architect” option where users can design their own missions. If so that is probably why company doesn’t care.

I was playing City of Villains the other night and one of my missions was to attack and defeat striking dockworkers and their leaders on behalf of the Family. I guess it’s a 2 way street.

Yes, it’s a player designed story arc made via Mission Architect. It’s story ID # 57374 in case you want to look it up for yourself.

I haven’t played CoH/CoV in a couple of years. You would think after the fight they had with Marvel, NCsoft would be more sensitive about player content.

Player content like this is not necessary unless NCsoft has stopped supporting the game and controlling the content, or worse, run out of ideas. If this is so, CoH/CoV is unlikely to survive. Further, allowing players to offend other paying customers by allowing content like this is bad business, again leading the game’s demise. Doubt if I will be back.. If you want player content, play Eve.

Really, the only thing constructive you can do is cancel your account(s). Nothing says reform to a company like cutting off income. There are tons of other online games out there that are enjoyable and civil. I could recommend at least one.

Meanwhile:

1) Is there a scenario where you have to stop the religion of “peace” from a) blowing up civilians, b) throwing acid in the faces of girls going to school, c) rapes to covert followers into bombers, etc. Of course, there would be little to distinguish these from Vahzilok.

2) Stopping government agents from a) preventing peaceful abortion clinic demonstrations, b) ending gun ownership rights, c) shutting down conservative dissent (fairness doctrine), etc.

Lots of conservative themes there.

Anyway, CoH/CoV was not a bad game. Good luck and have fun.

I don't think it's a big deal.

About 7-10years ago, for MS WWII Combat Flight simulator I made mission files for a similar web group/forum and I named all the Nazi fighter pilots that you had to shoot down after prominent Liberals. My files were never pulled.

If you make the file, I guess you can do whatever.

To my knowledge, MS has never made an online, pay to play, game. They flirted briefly with Vanguard, but pulled out before release. Pay to play and a supported file surver for player made scenarios are two very different things.

One my wife is playing actively now, and one I enjoyed for a while (and might get back to if I can justify yet another fee), is Lord of the Rings Online. The game is pretty well done and content controlled and nicely blends with the lore of J.R.R. You will really enjoy the game if you are familiar with the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and Simarillion, written forms. You do have to enjoy the genre, though.

There are no “evil” characters (you play races and do quests that aide the ring bearer). It is also the only game I have been in where it is fairly easy to be in a Christian kinship (super group). I keep peeking over at the screen when my wife is playing and I am happy to see how often she runs into characters from that kin.

Monthly fees are reasonable. Just Google, “Lord of the Rings Online”.
