I agree with you. Not only is it humiliating as you say, it is also degrading. In a country that values “face” or saving face so very highly, the Japanese must not only be somewhat surprised by Obama’s intentional loss of face, but also his naivete’,stupidity and immaturity. God help us.
He has no honor in this Americans way of thinking. But you are right about the Japanese. They will just see him as a submissive boob. So will those nut jobs in the middle east. Obama is a dangerous disgrace. Man of the world my ass.

Its a parody of a very deeply significant gesture in Japan. A mockery of Japanese culture, whether Obama intended that or not. Few Japanese have the privilege of bowing to the Emperor, and if this photo makes the news in Japan, it will be seen as a veiled insult, especially by the more conservative elements in Japan.
At this level of diplomacy, the game is played for keeps.
Obama has blown his whole visit.
