(Vanity) "ImpeachObama.com" was registered July 7 2004, goes to Google Search on "Obama"

I discovered something quite interesting just now.

The domain name "ImpeachObama.com" was registered on 15 Jul 2004 07:10:37, just over one week after Obama was CHOSEN to give the keynote speech to the Democratic National Convention in Boston, which he delivered on July 27, 2004, nearly two weeks AFTER the domain was registered.

Any browse to that address results in bringing up a Google search on the word "Obama," where, naturally, the first result is Obama's "Organizing for America" organization at BarackObama.com.

When it comes to scheming, those Democrats sure don't mess around, do they?

By visiting the site, your IP adress has probably been recorded, and you’re probably on an enemy’s watch list, or a terrorist watch list for subversive activity. You’ll be targeted by Obamas National Civilian Defense force.

What’s more interesting to me is that the “Registrant” is hidden behind a “Privacy Protection Service” screen. What have they got to hide, eh?

It's pretty common to do this. My domains are behind a "privacy screen" as well.

The reason: my first domain was registered long ago, when most people weren't even aware you could register one. The original contact address for that domain was "scraped" by a 'bot off the registrar's website at some point in the past, and it's on every spam mailing list in existence.

I refuse email to that original address, having invalidated it long ago. And I can see from the mail server logs: it's still being flooded with spam.

Sure, but if it was owned by someone opposed to then-Senator Obama, don’t you think they’d be doing something other with the domain than effectively forwarding it to BarackObama.com?

The original fishy site?

It should come as no surprise that this destruction of America has been in the works for years.

I don't doubt you... My first domain was in 1996, by 1999 I had half a dozen, all public info available... and I used my regular email address for them too...

But today, my spam level on that account is manageable, maybe 120-150 per day after the gray-list front-end, and the junk filter on Thunderbird takes out all but 2 or 3 with no significant false positives.

So it depends on what you mean by "flooded". If I had to weed through 150 spams a day by hand, I'd consider that "flooded". Thunderbird takes all but 2% of the work away, so I consider myself only mildly affected at worst.

Gray-listing, BTW, is pretty neat. The receiving mail server keeps an index of "known legit" sending IPs (essentially a whitelist); mail from those is accepted immediately. But a message from a previously unknown IP is told there is a problem, please try again later. Legit mailservers will try again, but spambots don't care, and don't bother, they move on. If the mailserver does try again (with the same message), it succeeds the second time, and that IP goes on the whitelist. The only cost is a one-time delay of one message, typically 15 minutes or so. It's surprisingly effective as a front-end.

I tried gray-listing for a while, but turned it off.

It certainly worked well, but delaying that first message was causing me problems. There were times when I wanted to see that message right away (perhaps because someone sent it to me, while I was on the phone with them).

Yahoo has lots of outgoing email servers, so I was encountering the delay multiple times, for messages from the same person.

Oh, I forgot that I didn't just invalidate that previous email address. I use the incoming email to train my spam filter. :-)
