I had the Mattel “ burp gun” in the 50’s . Made of METAL. Wound it up, put in a roll of caps , and it went full auto . Burned up the roll in about 10 seconds . Dad(Santa ) got me a whole carton box of caps to go with it . Can still smell the burnt powder . THOSE were the days .

Once again, an FR post sends me off on some wild Youtube tangent. Once you start watching, it's hard to stop. At least I made it back before half the night was gone. LOL!

Cool commercial. Just the kind of thing that gets liberal pacifists all 'weeweed up'. Gotta love it!

That alone is worth the price of admission. :-)

I got one for Christmas when I was about 10. Lasted about 4-5 months
before I ... redesigned it with my brother's wood burning tool. ;o)

Secret Sam sells for less on Ebay than Johnny Seven.

The one that caught my eye and still plays in my brain was the Johnny Eagle Rifle, a version for Safari, Military or western: Mogambo, Lieutenant and Red River.

This was a quality cap gun. Ate up caps as fast as a real one would use .45 ACP. At a nickel a box, learned to conserve ammo. Made of plastic, but still lasted until it was run over by a car.

You sure it wasn’t an m-14 with a red tube that simulated a flash on the barrel. My brother had one of those.

I got a plastic vacuum molding toy before 1970. I still remember the smell and feel of my burning flesh! :)

>> This was a quality cap gun.

I actually HAD one of those. Neighbor gave my brother and I one apiece. You’re right about the durability.

Man, those were the days. I remember Johnny 7 and Secret Sam. I lusted after them but it didn’t happen — no birthday, no Christmas, nuthin’. I remember trying to knock off something similar to the Secret Sam — a Mattel Shootin’ Shell firing gizmo I built inside an old briefcase-like box I made. As I recall it didn’t work so well.

On the other hand I don’t even remember the “secret date” game even though it was of the same era. Maybe that’s a good thing!

My brother and I had it the first year it came out.
