The mysterious Ellie Light

A "woman" named Ellie Light is suddenly appearing in publications nationwide, but who "she" is no one knows. "Her" message? President Obama never promised you a rose garden (or something to that effect).

"Light's" message (as reported on Hotair.com) this weekend: "Today, the president is being attacked as if he'd promised that our problems would wash off in the morning. He never did. It's time for Americans to realize that governing is hard work, and that a president can't just wave a magic wand and fix everything."

Reports Newsbusters.com: "Politico's Ben Smith was first to take the bait publishing the letter on January 7 and explaining that it was just so well-written he couldn't resist."

Why are publications so drawn to Light's words? "Editors all over the country found Light's message strangely compelling," states a Hotair.com post. "It was reprinted at Politico; the Philadelphia Daily News; the San Francisco Examiner; the Washington Times; and a USA Today blog. In addition, the letter has appeared at literally dozens of small-town papers across the country, with names like the Los Banos Enterprise, the North Adams Transcript, and the Danbury News-Times."

Smith didn't notice anything that gave him pause. "It was a well-written, lucid email of the kind I occasionally print, and I Googled the name and a stretch of text to make sure it wasn't pulled from elsewhere on the web, and didn't appear elsewhere, because I guess I was the first to print it," he told FishbowlDC this morning. "The whole thing is intriguing, though I wouldn't overestimate the amount of deviousness involved in this. You could pull off this whole elaborate plot in 15 minutes. Still, I'd love to know who was doing it."

The scribe isn't giving up. "My favorite clue ... is that one Ellie Light posted a comment on a Times review of a Greek diner in the Green neighborhood of Astoria, Queens (NYC) in 2008, complaining that the arugula hadn't been properly washed."

Most of the papers listed above are owned by Gannett. Coincidence?
