Where has this guy testified as forensic expert?

Can you say mistrial?

Is it too late to have the NYPD revoke his pension?

To get FPS from MPH, multiply by 1.47. It isn’t as exact as we engineers can bore people with, given a minute and a calculator, but it gets you pretty darn close.

And the result: 3000 fps is 2040.8 MPH.

I don't think that I have ever heard trigger pull described in pounds per square inch. The fool used pounds and psi interchangeably.

Unfortunately this is the kind of "expert" that often testifies particularly on behalf of the prosecution.

To use this thing you have to have some knowledge of weapons and use of weapons.

So it would take five or ten minutes of reading the manual to know that you don't put rounds of ammo down the barrel like a Civil War cannon and you don't karate chop the scope to fire it. Congratulation, now you are an expert.

Well, if you point it at an elephant I guess that makes it an elephant gun.

Which is incredibly stupid because some states won’t allow you to use .223 on deer for fear it’s too SMALL!

Actually, I just noted that 5280 is close to 1-1/2 times 3600 and called 1.5 good enough.

Not unless it has some effect on the elephant.

If he could actually DO the math and physics of it, he’d know that almost all .224 bullets extant have a really poor ballistic coefficient (BC) and they bleed off energy at a ferocious rate as they go downrange.

Kinetic energy is 0.5 * Mass * Velocity^2, so as the velocity bleeds off from a poor BC, we get a geometric drop in the kinetic energy.

This is why those of us who have been ‘round and ‘round and ‘round the ballistics issue in hunting eventually all come back to the idea that “mass is your friend” - because while your bullets lose velocity on their way downrange, they don’t typically lose mass.

Which is why I’d much rather hunt elephants (or anything else large) with a .45-70 launching a 400 to 500gr pill at 1700 down to 1350fps instead of a .223 launching a 55gr pill at 3000 fps. Sure, the .45-70 has a trajectory like a mortar. But when the bullet gets downrange... it will do something, even if it is down to 800fps. A .223 bled down to 1000 fps is down to .22LR velocities — and will likely deliver .22LR results.

To convert to MPH, you buy a hewlet packard hp50g calculator and enter the number then go to the velocity menue and find the appropriate units.

aint that how in-gan-ears do it?

Small nit:

“Not unless it has some effect on the elephant... other than pissing him off...”

2045.45. ;-) Which is not 2554 like Mr. Expert said.

Also,

That and I've never seen a "round nose" .223 round. Spire, hollow, fmj, vldc, moly-coated... Round nose is a new one.

Maybe the newbies and the wet-behind-the-ears twerps.

When I was going to school, the HP-41C had just come out. To prevent cheating, many professors responded to the programmable calculator by changing all the numbers on tests to be some multiple of 1, 2, 5 or 10, so that the arithmetic on the test became very east to do by hand. Then they increased the amount of reckoning you needed to do to get the answer.

The last thing they did was make everyone memorize constants: pi, e, natural and common logs of 0 through 10, and all manner of natural constants.

FPS to MPH was one of those constants.

Still, I keep my HP-41CV to this day. I intend to be buried with it.

There are some round-nosed lead bullet molds available in .224, and Corbin has some swage dies for round nosed pills in .224.

I’ll admit they’re hardly common (and they’d make an already low BC even lower), but if you really, really want a round nosed .224 pill, you can get or make one.

May as well be shooting a .22LR at that point. Save yourself the powder...
