Where Were You When the Republic Died?
American Thinker ^ | 03/22/10 | Matt Patterson

Posted on 03/21/2010 10:48:23 PM PDT by American Dream 246

In November 2008, Americans elected a socialist as their president. In March 2010, they woke up stunned to find themselves living in a socialist country.

Health insurers - once private companies - are now organs of the federal government. Every citizen is a ward of the state, which can now compel you to have insurance; punish you if you don't; determine if your insurance is acceptable; punish you if it isn't. Thousands of new federal bureaucrats will soon spill from the D.C. Beltway and flood the country, scrutinizing our finances to verify compliance with this new law.

A government that grants itself this kind of power over us can conceivably do anything to us. For our own good, of course. Such a country is in no meaningful sense "free."

And this is only the beginning. Liberals are salivating in contemplation of all the fanciful window trimmings that can in the future be hung from this legislative framework. Public option will soon appear as prelude to single payer, as was the intent all along. Soon, Americans won't even have the illusion of a choice - the government will move from subsidizer to provider, and it will be the only game in town.

So what's next? Some look to the states as possible saviors. Please. The states long ago surrendered their sovereignty, and are now junkies on federal monies, which they need for schools, roads, Medicaid, and much else. If the citizens are now wards of the federal government, the states long since preceded them in that sorry servitude.

The individual? What are we going to do, not pay the taxes to support this beast? Oh, they'll take that from you before you ever get your check; we gave them that power to them long ago, remember. March on Washington, en masse? Lot of good that's done thus far.

The Republicans? Assuming the GOP can take back both houses of Congress and the White House in the next couple of elections (by no means a sure thing), can you name one gigantic entitlement enacted by liberals that Republicans have successfully repealed? Or even made serious effort to repeal? Ever? Anyone?

The Courts? Sure, maybe Obamacare will work its way through the courts, and maybe the Supreme Court will finally take up the case (there is no guarantee of that, remember), and maybe the Court will not have tilted left by then, and maybe the Justices will declare it unconstitutional. Then what? Who will enforce this decision? Obamacare is already unconstitutional on its face, and yet is the law of the land. Do you think the Democrats will say, "Oh, all-right, never-mind," and cheerfully strike it from the books after their successful five-decade long crusade?

And even if a court challenge is eventually successful, how much of the bureaucracy will by then already be in place, how many of the thousands of new regulations already in effect, how much of the billions in new taxes and fines collected, how many jobs killed, how many middle class families addicted to the entitlement?

There's a reason Democrats were desperate to ram this through at all cost - once enacted, such things are all but perpetual. Former freedom-loving peoples begin to tell themselves it's really not so bad. Sure, government is forcing you to eat state-approved gruel, but hey, at least they hold the spoon, and they even pour a little sugar on top when you're good.

The worst part of watching the proceedings unfold on Sunday was the endless stream of commentators and pundits calmly discussing this bill as if it were just one more piece of bad legislation we will have to live under. In fact, what has transpired is nothing less than an overthrow of the old Constitutional order.

In 1776, the American Republic boldly announced its birth with the Declaration of Independence. In 2010, it quietly expired with a declaration of dependence - on government, on entitlement, and on the Democratic party.

I’m flying my flag upside down tomorrow. Then I am going to march myself down to (or maybe just call first) my local republican party HQ and sign up to volunteer.

Your points all well taken. No disrespect to the flag but I cannot CANNOT endorse a COMMUNIST DICTATORSHIP that wraps itself in our national flag and twists every word in an Orwellian dance macabre of the destruction of liberty and freedom. SO, for now and until we liberate our land from fascism, it stays in the drawer.

God no! The states would send as their delegates the same communists they send to Congress. A Constitutional convention is the LAST thing we want.

Yes, that's what I think too of what I've read and heard about it.

Where was/am I? Sitting on a beach in Pattaya, Thailand right now, and I believe the night will consist of many wonderfully concocted libations...

I frequent The American Thinker, and often times post threads from their site.

It is not fear that motivates me. And I don’t doubt the outrage of many, justifiably so. This is precisely what needs to occur, rather than a throwing up of the hands and saying “it’s over”.

“But there were only a small minority that fought and died for our original freedoms written in our Constitution, and that is the way it will always be.”

What history book are you reading? “...small minority...”?

The Republic will endure. This is a bad time for our nation, but we will not let these temporary occupiers of office destroy the promised land. As much as their undemocratic and unconstitutional actions have struck a blow, it is only when we give in that the fight is lost. As heavy as this news is, I see an interest, an intensity, and a disgust for big government in my countrymen that I have never seen before. These are the seeds of something big - the next conservative revolution. America will be great again. It's time to get to work.

I’m not convinced repeal is impossible. This mess cannot work in such a huge country as ours. Our healthcare system is going to start collapsing in a matter of weeks. Things are going to get bad and steadily worse throughout, never mind the job numbers. Obamacare has nothing to offer but misery and death. They’ve already run out of other people’s money.

Dictators go down when they can no longer pay off even their favorites.

All you have to think of is the like of James Madison being replaced by say, the likes of Henry Waxman, and you have your answer on the Constitutional convention.

We are - I am not saying that and give up. I am desesperatly trying to make all of you understand, since way before the elections of 08 the danger we face with Obama. And I keep on having this response: cannot happen here. Well, it just happened so now may be, may be you will start to REALLY wake up and do something else than teaparties??? I come from a communist country - or very very socialist with communist and fascist neighbors and fascist history so don't give me the troll treatment. YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT'S HAPPENING TO YOU! May be now after tonight you will start to get it???

Wow...what a nightmarish thought...I would like to hear Rush talk about that and hear what he thinks but I am pretty sure I did few years ago or around the elections and that was not good.

I know, and I did not say it would be easy, but we have to piss them off.

Liberals only hate the flag and patriotism when it suits their political purposes. If you put them on the defensive now, they will fly it like it's made of gold.

My real point in this is to broach the idea that we must dissolve the government along with it's current flag in order to save it. It's the only way and I've been looking at this for decades. Ever since Carter.

This government corruption did not start with Obama. It started with Teddy Roosevelt(the big populist) and took a big leap under Franklin Roosevelt.(The big socialist) It became obvious when the Communist party got a foothold in America in the 30s and Nazis in the 40s and all under the watchful eye of government.

Now we are dealing with the children and grandchildren of these purported Americans who are educating our kids and serving all throughout our governments local, state and national.

We were invaded and they own this government. They have made their move and now it's time to respond. At some point, they will try to destroy us, and when they do, we win because that will be when the United States become united again.

If it does not work, and we fail, then you don't really want to live under fascism anyway. I know I don't. Socialists use fascism to control a unruly population, and you can bet on it's arrival very soon.

The major problem we face is THE PEOPLE. That government - dictatorship is there because of THE PEOPLE who voted them in. How many of the “entitled” are we going to have in teh next year or years that we will never return to an enough majority because THE PEOPLE will love to be assisted? That’s exactly the purpose of the dictator - more entitlements - more people will never want to give that up. And that’s how they stay there for ever. Hitler did it - universal healthcare - Staline did it. And now we just did it. Optimism may come tomorrow but right now, history does not make me very optimistic. Sorry - we had 1 year and 1/2 to fight hard and we did not - or not the right way - so now here we are. Law and politeness DO NOT work with dictators. Chamberlain, remember?

If you read my history you’ll soon discover, without any doubt, that I’ve never been one to say, “cannot happen here.” As a matter of fact, you and I may very well be on the same page in terms of posting threads which address the current state of political/social affairs in this country. We’re just going about it in different ways.

I often post the Communist Goals of ‘63 document as well as the Soviet Subverstion of the Free Press transcript which quotes former KGB agent, Yuri Bezmenov.

Also, my family has spent time in a Communist country, and not one that simply borders it. I completely understand what is at stake, and what is going on. So much so, that we removed our children from the public education/indoctrination institutes.

So try not to assume so much.
