My favorite sentiment about the U.S. Supreme Court is from that rascal President Andrew Jackson. In 1832 the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision in Worcester v. Georgia that Old Hickory wasn't too happy with. In reply he is famous for the sentiment that the Court made its decision and proposed that "now let them enforce it."*
Would that we had more Andrew Jacksons.
Well, perhaps we do have at least one. I nominate Governor Chris Christie for the Andrew Jackson award for 2010 because Christie is taking an extremely unusual measure for this day and age. He's firing one of New Jersey's Supreme Court Justices and appointing one of his own, one that will closer follow a more conservative path...

This guy kicks a$$. I’m definitely a fan of his!!
bttt
Read the article Gov Christie to NJ Supreme Court Justice: Youre Fired!... Sorry for the mix up folks.
Link goes to a different story — something about riding bikes...
You can “report abuse” on yourself and ask the mod to fix it...
Governor Christie rides down renegade robed Justice with his bike?
(and that's where is large girth come in handy...)
He can do this?
Can the President?
He did not fire. He simply did not reappoint.

Oh yes.
He is my favorite governor right now.
From the article:
“Before and since becoming governor, I was unambiguous in my intention to bring balance and change to the Supreme Court. My selection today is not a commentary on Justice Wallace. It is a fulfillment of my promise to turn the court away from its history of using legal precedent to set social and tax policies in our state a role which belongs squarely with the legislative and executive branches of state government.”
I don’t know about that one ... :-)
Imagine the chaos that would happen in the U.S. Supreme Court if that tack were taken by Obama about now... saying that he was going to “restore balance” to the court and fire about three or four justice and appoint his own ... LOL ...
And then the next President would fire the “whole lot” of them and appoint a new set... and so on for every President...
That would kinda take away the “separation of powers” doctrine, I would say ...
Gots to like this Christie fella.
Mobile, I’m coming to Illinois in 10 days to start a journey across route 66 to Santa Monica.
So I want you to make sure Chicago is straightened out by then ok?
I love Christie, but this is a stupid article because it has no information. What’s going on in NJ?
“Imagine the chaos that would happen in the U.S. Supreme Court if that tack were taken by Obama about now”
US SC justices are appointed for life. Obama has no power to “fire” any of them else 4 most assuredly would have been dumped by now, including the Chief Justice.
In NJ, the justices apparently serve 7 year terms, so all Christie did was fail to reappoint a liberal judge whose term was expiring. That’s clearly his prerogative, whereas “firing” a justice who had served only 5 years of a 7 year term would not be.
I do realize that about the U.S. Supreme Court, and that there’s a reason for that... in that they can’t be fired... and it does have to do with the “separation of powers” doctrine. And I agree with that.
I was just saying that if anyone thought this was a good idea for the U.S. to follow, too — it wouldn’t necessarily be such a good idea ... :-)
As for Christie, if he’s simply appointing a new judge for one who is leaving at the end of his term... well... that’s no big deal ... LOL ...
Didn’t know the governor had this power....
Justices in NJ are appointed for seven year terms. The Governor is NOT obligated to reappoint, despite what the slovenly Uniontard Sweeney thinks.
It has been a long time since I was proud of my governor. The court in NJ can get balance with the choices of governors from both parties. In NJ, it has been the Dems making most of the appointments to the State Supreme Court for a number of years. Elections have consequences. Thank God for Governor Christie taking action.
