Toy Story 3: Movie Review

It is pretty easy nowadays to write a review of a Pixar movie. Simply write, 'Great!', and end it there...and you would pretty much hit the nail on the head.

The original Toy Story movies were the coming out party for Pixar 15 years ago. They introduced America to a new kind of animation...one that once again drew adults and children. And this movie, as much as any, taps into that.

TS2 was without a doubt the worst Pixar flick made... I hope 3 is better.. because 2 should not have been made and the entire reason Disney bought out Pixar was because Disney wanted TS3 and Pixar did not want to make it.... So I hope it is good, but I’m not buying into any hype on this one.

Yes...where was Bo? (Annie Potts???) and Weezer???

SPOILERS AHOY.

It was revealed at the very beginning that, well, some toys had been sold or given away over the years. Wheezey and Bo Peep were two of them.

Incidentally, how come TS2 "shouldn't" have been made?

For the record, Disney and Pixar were going to split, and Disney had the rights to Toy Story. They were going to go ahead and make TS3 without Pixar. That, among other things, was what made Pixar merge with Disney (so it wasn't exactly a case of Disney buying Pixar to make TS3; it was Pixar merging with Disney so that they themselves could make it).

The Toy Story movies are very well done. Trust me, Bugs is not the last good cartoon! However, the Toy Story movies are not cartoons - they are those animated Pixar movies (I forget what it’s called).

Hubby and I saw The Incredibles awhile back and I laughed so hard I cried.

A little more background on the Pixar/Disney thing. Steve Jobs, who is quite vindictive when crossed, became increasingly angry over what he saw as Michael Eisner destroying the integrity of the Toy Story characters with cheap, poorly written, poorly animated knockoffs they were using to fill space on the Disney Channel. The biggest offender was the wretched cartoon series "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command." Eisner also insulted Apple Computers, claiming their "rip, mix, burn" ad campaign was advertising pirating music. He also refused to allow Pixar to consider Toy Story 2 as a feature length film to complete their five movie initial deal with Disney, stating that sequels did not count in the contract.

Eisner had already run off Jeff Katzenberg, the man who had revitalized the Disney animation studios (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King.) Katzenberg went on to produce the Shrek series for Dreamworks. His feud with Eisner was the reason the first Shrek mocked Disney so relentlessly, and the reason that the Lilo and Stitch ad campaign showed Stitch dissing the lead characters of the Disney cartoons made by Katzenberg.

Disney animation was on the ropes, and the Pixar franchise was the only one with marketable new characters. Eisner, for reasons known only to him, was playing hardball with Jobs as he had with Katzenberg. Jobs waited until the date of a key Disney board meeting where the question of whether to maintain Eisner as CEO was being discussed, and about an hour before the meeting, held a press conference announcing that Pixar was ending negotiations with Disney to renew their contract when Pixar completed it's fifth film. Jobs refusal to negotiate with Disney while Eisner was CEO was one of the key reasons Eisner was finally forced out.

After Eisner was out, Disney purchased Pixar in a deal that made Jobs the largest single holder of Disney stock. Oddly enough, Jobs primary objective in Pixar was that the studio be allowed to create great movies without interference and that they maintain creative control of the Pixar characters. Eisner was always looking for a cheap way to capitalize on marketable characters; hence the Disney tactic of releasing a well made major release and following up with poorly done direct to DVD movies and cartoon shows featuring the main characters.

Had Eisner left the Pixar characters alone, Jobs and Pixar would have made him a fortune. Pixar's still making a fortune, but Eisner isn't seeing any of it.

TS1 isn't for very young children unless you want to teach them to call each other 'stupid', learn to play with matches, torture, and have dreams about scary spider-like creature toys having a baby doll face missing an eye. Of course the want to see the movie since Buzz and Woody are heavily promoted.

IMHO Toy Story wasn't really marketed for kids, it's aimed at the adults.

Other movies that have great appeal to children but are not suitable for children are Dr. Dolittle (sexual/crude), Robots (sexual/crude), and Stewart Little.

The concept of Wall E was that people should be self sufficient and not rely on some nanny/goverment/Big Brother.

Virtually everyone I know thought TS2 was better than the original.

Do you think Lewis Carroll’s Alice books are for children with all their disturbing imagery? How about the Grimm Brothers tales?

Well don’t count me in that, TS2 was to me the worst by far movie PIXAR has made to date... It is the bottom of the barrel in terms of Pixar’s work.

Now that being said, even the worst Pixar movie ever made rates at an average to above average when compared to typical films, but there is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that TS2 does not remotely meet the standards of the rest of Pixar’s catalogue.

A Bug’s Life and Cars were a lot worse no? TS2 had Woody tackle a moral dilemma every bit as wrenching as anything you’re likely to see in any recent film. The theme of living for the present or for the future was very movingly presented.

Thanks for the thread Neovatara. I loved TS3 & prolly will see it again on big screen & get DVD. I went with a date & the audience was 3/4 adult & all seat filled.

There was a lot of emotion involved & almost everyone around me was crying at the end (big men included)

If it comes out in 3D will see it in 3D.

The short beforehand was interesting. I wish more of the shorts people made were on , like years ago there was a cartoon prior to movie. There are a lot of amazing shorts out there. Some easier to follow than others.

I get to the movies a few times a week & see most unless it has horrendous ratings (and I even see some of those)

Sorry, you aren't going to win me over, TS2 was average fair, the story was slow, damned near stagnant at parts, and lacked the imagination that PIXAR has routinely shown. TS2 just doesn't have the typical Pixar spark, its just completely missing.

It was an average movie, not the worst movie ever made by any stretch, but among PIXAR’s films it is by far the worst.

Just saw TS3 today - loved it. Teared up. Laughed and smiled in remembrance of watching TS1 with my then little boy.

Barbie kicked A$$ and gets it.

I thought the effects and artistry of Day and Night were very interesting and kind of old school. But that whole talk radio/ radio tower thing just left me cold. Hated it.
