The Great Glenn Beck-a-Palooza
Warning Signs ^ | August 29, 2010 | By Alan Caruba

Posted on 08/30/2010 3:22:50 AM PDT by Ronbo1948

Not only did a lot of people show up at the Lincoln Memorial and around the reflecting pool on Saturday, the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s famed “I have a dream speech”, but the mainstream media drew criticism for reporting the obvious. They were mostly white.

Maybe I just wasn’t paying attention in the weeks leading up to the event, but I assumed Glenn Beck was going to use the platform to call attention to the key issues with which the nation is struggling and which will influence the outcome of the forthcoming November midterm elections. Obviously I was wrong.

I have been to an evangelical tent meeting. I actually met the late Oral Roberts long ago in Columbus, Georgia where he invited me to attend. I can still recall the fervor of that evening and I was reminded of it while watching Beck.

There was a lot of talk of God, but I don’t recall that Dr. King, a preacher of astonishing power, was preaching Christ Jesus that day forty-seven years ago. King focused on the problem that had been troubling the soul of America since the days of the Revolution, the days of the Civil War, the Reconstruction, and the hundred years that had passed since then.

So the criticism is of the Beck rally is:

1. Not enough like an evangelical tent meeting
2. Not enough like MLK’s original speech
3. Both 1 & 2
4. Neither 1 nor 2
5. I don’t have the slightest idea, actually, and neither does the author, but I just hate Beck, like the author does.

You had it right the first time.

Peps... as in rally peps.

We really enjoyed the 3 hour Beck fund raising event for Warriors of Soldiers.

So many will twist, denounce and pee upon what Beck and freinds did.

It only gave us a lift in spirit of what we have held near and dear to our souls in our life time.

No critism here.
He had the guts to do this, Glory all to God.

To watch and listen to “black” folks being honored and speaking[among others of course]....

Oh the horror.

As a former drug & alcohol abuse counselor, I see reflected in Glenn Beck the same mindset that destroyed many of my clients - a mystical belief they must surrender to the collectivists of AA to save themselves instead of using their God given ability to reason their way to complete recovery.

Therefore, what I saw Saturday wasn’t a prayer meeting, it was a massive AA meeting.

No doubt the next thing Beck will be telling us next that we are all suffering from the “disease” of socialism, and that we must attend his “meeting” daily if we are to be in “recovery” (never recovered) from the disease of socialism.

Beck, for all of his American Revolution preaching, seems to have missed its central thesis which was that man should use his God given ability to individual reason and not the sanction of a “group consiousness.”

In effect, Beck says that a “mystical collectivist conciousness” is needed to oppose “socialist mystical consiousness” - I’d say Beck’s cure is worse than the disease.

Yes, Beck, like most AA Nazis, is creepy.

Beck Derangement Syndrome.

Started here in FR in 2010.

1. Beck is not running for office
2. Beck is not asking for your vote or your money
3. Beck called for an Honor America rally and a lot of people came.
4. You are demeaning that rally (and all those people, did you read any of their comments, those who actually went?) and downgrading all those people to AA collectivists (whatever the f* that even means)
5. You are basically saying that all those people who went to that rally to support AMERICA didn’t really go for that reason and they all need to come to YOU to find out the REAL reason they went to the rally

And by the way, I am not a Mormon and I am not promoting Beck for anything. I'm not even saying you should watch his show.

I attended the Restore Honor Rally.

It had the county fair feel about it.

I did not hear one harsh word exchanged during the entire day.

If it woke up some politicians all the better. Although I understand that Obama did not bother to watch any of it.

I have been a longtime fan of Beck’s. My favorite show of his was the post Election 2004 Gloatathon. That was awesome! I am still a fan of his, I think he is mostly right about the issues. But I must admit that the whole thing makes me feel uneasy these days, I fear he may unknowningly be turning into what I dislike most about the Obama thing... the whole “Person as a savior” idea... I know he is trying NOT to have this turn out that way, but it just seems to be headed in that direction....

Unfortunately in today's world too many libs look at how many minorities attended Beck's rally vs. how many Americans attended the rally. They continue to divide this great country by not looking at us as Americans.

I say bravo for Glenn. He really struck a chord with those who saw this wonderful moment of bringing people together not dashing them apart.

Okay. I watched the event. I read the reviews, commentary and postings. I can take or leave Mr. Beck. Some of his shows are interesting but mostly in small doses.

I believe he has done well by bringing a long overdue measure of participation to the conservative/libertarian base. I also believe it's a bit insulting to those who already live their lives by Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Buddhist, etc. values to say they aren't doing enough.

it was all a bit New Agey for me or perhaps a bit Millerite.

Exactly! The higher power, according to AA, could be anything except YOURSELF. So since you’re “insane” and your “higher power” could be anything...say your bed pan in detox, your AA group becomes the de facto higher power with a “group conciousness.”

We are talking collectivism....FASCISM.

You are welcome. And again, for the record, I am not a Mormon and I’m quite sure I’ll never be a Mormon and if I were in a discussion on the relative merits of Mormonism vs other religions I’m sure I could add some points of interest in that discussion.

But that’s NOT the discussion when we’re talking about the Beck rally since he never once, from what I heard from the people who were there or from the video I saw, pushed or promoted Mormonism. He was pushing and promoting America.

And that’s what should be what’s under discussion when we’re talking about this topic, America, not Mormonism and in fact, not even Beck, since he wasn’t pushing himself, either.

That's a fair criticism. To be even fairer, though, you have to say that about any politician or public speaker who says we must return America to its core values. Don't a lot of Americans already share those core values?

I guess I would answer that there's always room for improvement and that there's no way to speak about the need for improvement without making some broad generalizations.

Thats the criticism ? And I happen to think your linked article is ALL about the author Alan Caruba (is that you?)

BTW, I have no idea whatsoever why he/you has a bug up his a$$ about Beck, given that he made no incitement to violence or really did anything whatsoever objectionable, although you/he did go out of his way to mention all the white people there. Sheesh.

In fact, Beck is betraying the Mormons, just as he is all Americans.

BECK IS AA ALL THE WAY! http://www.orange-papers.org/

Folks, Glenn Beck is a highly unstable individual who at a critical time in our history has wrapped himself in God and the American flag for reasons of his own agenda.

I predict that soon he’ll have a break down...The man is on overdrive.

Wow, you must have been a crappy counselor - telling them to rely on the same person who got them into the mess (themselves). Are you by any chance agnostic or atheist?

Do you understand that A.A. has a better track record for long-term sobriety than any other option out there?

I guess you'd rather folks surrender to the singular will of yourself than to a God with all power. You obviously committed a cardinal sin for a "counselor"; you have no idea of what the other programs are really doing.

No you’re not attacking Mormons but you’re attacking Beck and I don’t really see why.

I personally don’t care that much about Beck and I’m not going to get into any long-winded defense of Beck. Basically I think he does a good job on his show and that people watching it have a net increase in understanding American history, but so what?

That’s not the point.

The point is not that you’re attacking Beck but that you’re also, by implication, attacking the million or so people who went to the rally. Attacking them as being stupid. (Yes, you are!)

Attacking them as being hoodwinked. Yes. You are.

You know better than they do what it is they went to and what was there.

They were stupid. You are smart.

Yes. That’s what you’re saying.

He DID do well and kept it as advertised: non-political.

I watched Sarah’s speech and caught the brief reference to Zero but even she kept it focused where it was supposed to be.

I also caught a glimpse of Sharpton’s rally...bleagh...no comparison, even tho some tried to make them “equivalent”. 3k vs 300k.

Not even close. Nor was the content as uplifting as at Beck’s.

Maybe the rally wasn’t all things to all people, but the message was unmistakable.

Hundreds of thousands of ordinary Americans took the time and spent the money to come to Washington, meet up, and express their displeasure with the current hijacking of our country.

And there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that! American Patriotism at its finest.

(Just waiting for Pelosi to demand an investigation into WHO paid for all those airline tickets...)

Wow, I listened and what I got was individual responsibility is what is needed.

Beck said yesterday in his interview w/Chris Wallace, that his God theme was like the thinking that influenced the Founders. Example:

Benjamin Franklin: “ God governs in the affairs of man. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this. I also believe that, without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel” –Constitutional Convention of 1787

Media says “Too many Whites” huh? America is overwhelmingly white. A cross section of America will give you a largely white crowd. Out of 100 people you may have 3 Muslims, 12 Blacks, 10 Hispanics (many of whom are white), 1 Indian, etc. But the media wants everything to “look like America” so a campaign photo will have a backdrop of an oriental, Black,
i.e. disproportionate showing of minorities. And if a job opens up, like a football coach, the minority is supposed to get it or it must be a “racist” choice.
