Either our nation's obesity problem is just as bad as they say, or Costco knows something we don't, because the aircraft carrier-scaled big box store is now offering enough (horrifying) food to last you a year for a cool $800.
The monstrous, 5,011 serving package, courtesy of food outfitter Shelf Reliance (hey, at least we'll have kept our senses of humor during doomsday!) claims their end days buffet contains "only top-of-the-line products," "developed with everyday menu planning in mind." Which makes sense, of course, because the only thing worse than knowing that the entire eastern seaboard has been leveled by nukes or a horde of flesh-feasting space titans is repetitive bunker fare—dehydrated fish skin AGAIN, mom?
Possibly more disconcerting than the notion of a year underground eating food from Costco is the fact that the package isn't just marketed for emergencies, but for "long-term food storage supply." Meaning that someone, somewhere, thinks it's a rational idea to buy an $800 cargo crate including containing 84 gallon-sized cans, to just, y'know, save yourself a trip to the grocery store. Now, I am totally down with Costco's cheese platters, and pasta multi-packs, but. My God.

I used to drive my kids nuts with an old Chinese proverb when they said they didn't like the taste of the food we fed them: "Hunger is the best sauce".
A good one to remember as you contemplate a can of Alpo after TSHTF.
Also, don't use empty milk jugs to store water. Use clean soda bottles.
Water for drinking only. If you run out of water, turn off your water heater in your home, UNPLUG it, let it cool down. You can drink that.

Those of us that have needed emergency supplies in our lives, and those that can see the need for them, or that know history, including American history, think being prepared is common sense.

I remember back around 1969 or 1970 a hurricane hit Hawaii and knocked out all commercial electrical generating stations on one of the islands.
They then had a problem in that they didn’t have anything that could produce enough power to “energize the field coils” (or something like that) of the generators.
The USN arranged for a nuke submarine to pull up to the dock and essentially “jump-start” the island.
I remember the photo in the newspaper; the cable looked to be about the size of your leg.
Some people like TVP (texturized vegetable protein) and some don’t. Buy it in small amounts, if possible, to find out on which side of the fence you fall.
Lori, store the *ingredients* for soup for a much longer shelf life. I’ve written about how to do this on my blog, if you’re interested.
Having on hand tomato powder, dried milk, and bouillon are a great way to start. Then have rice, beans, barley, dehydrated veggies, etc. whatever you typically like in your soups. All of these have extensive shelf lives.
Mountain House is pretty good, but be sure to try small size packages before investing in the #10 cans. I was sent several different types to sample, and their Mexican filling for wraps was nasty, and I love Mexican food.
Also, they’re very high in sodium, if that’s an issue. Check out the ingredient list to make sure there are no allergy or sensitivity issues.

Question. How often should water be rotated out. And related question: How long will it stay drinkable before the use of purification is necessary?
If you live in the western third of the US, Azure Standard has all kinds of bulk foods and they deliver for free with a $500 order, you can put together an order with other people.
It isn’t shelf stable emergency rations but cheap bulk foods.
Store what you eat and eat what you store is the best way to do it.
Soup is mostly low calorie and provides very little solid nutrition.
I’ll take Tactical Bacon instead!

I can’t afford all that fancy stuff, I just buy in bulk what I already eat and rotate it. I eat very simply anyway so that’s no problem.

Actually, we barbecued from our freezer for a while. By that time, the National Guard came in and we were given MREs. They were pretty good. Our church alone served over 100,000 people in the next couple of months following and over 300,000 meals. We were without electricity/cable,water etc. for a while but being outside of New Olreans the water subsided much sooner. The only good thing was that we were pretty much all alone in our area and the peace and quiet was kinda nice.
