Coal Mining Causing Earthquakes, Study Says
National Geographic News ^ | January 3, 2007 | Richard A. Lovett

The most damaging earthquake in Australia's history was caused by humans, new research says.

The magnitude-5.6 quake that struck Newcastle in New South Wales on December 28, 1989, killed 13 people, injured 160, and caused 3.5 billion U.S. dollars worth of damage.

That quake was triggered by changes in tectonic forces caused by 200 years of underground coal mining, according to a study by Christian D. Klose of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, New York.

I'm haggling with liberals over this, they claim this is proof that man can decidedly influence massive earth forces...and thus can be the cause of global warming. I know that there is rsearch work done that challenged Klose's work on the Newcastle earthquake, can't find it through internet searches. Anyone have a link or can point me in the right direction? Geoscientist Professor Stephen Cox from the Department of Earth & Marine Sciences at the Australian National University, Bruce Hebblewhite, Professor of Mining Engineering at the University of NSW, and Professor Robert Melchers from Newcastle University all have expressed deep doubts about Klose's findings in various articles, but I can't find their reasearch work wich supports their opinion...a lil freeper help woud be appreciated.

Of course. Humans are only one paying taxes and government needs more money so - it is humans fault and must be taxed to fix it.

All the many earthquakes in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania seem to bear this out. Oh wait.

rush said that this would happen... perhaps if we didn’t pile our trash in big piles and were allowed to burn it, the weight of the garbage wouldn’t cause earthquakes.

we are definitely doomed.

Correctomundo. Every one of the “experts” are university quacks. They all live in the world of thoery and that is all we need to know about them.

The epicenter was 7 miles under the surface. How deep are those coal mines?

More likely the "scientist" is actually just mining for research grants.

There’s no research grants for professors who don’t cause trouble ...... ooops ...... I meant to say, who don;t discover problems.

I burn most of my paper waste.

When is the last time you heard of an earthquake centered under Michigan?

How does this explain all the earthquakes prior to the industrial age?

Liberal egghead hacks.

What they live in is a state of delusion. Believers in “climate change” are little more than cultists of the worst type.

So before coal was mined, what caused the earthquakes?

I thought California was filled with Gold mines, not coal mines.

Another Professor Richard Cranium heard from.

The only human caused earthquakes in even the 3 range of magnitude I know of involved injecting fluid in areas of previous seismic activity along existing faults.

But one must remember the anti-oil and anti-coal jihad are in full swing.

There's been earthquakes, floods, fire and famine since before man had opposable thumbs (if you believe in that evolution stuff), and there will always be.

The dew is off the rose on Global Warming and the parasites are looking for another cause to justify some grant money and an easy living.

I know, let's live like the Eloi...just swim and play, laugh and romp all the time and let someone else fatten us up for the kill...oh, but wait...obama is already doing that, isn't he?

We might as well just go out the find a tree to sit under and wait for the first special interest "group" to go whining to the media because we're using energy, building houses, eating meat, starting our cars, drilling for oil, etc., etc., etc., ...no matter what it is, there is a freeloading bunch of scumbags out there with a burr under their saddle about it...demanding it be stopped immediately.

It's the same idiots that believe in an "evolving Constitution" that cannot fathom the earth moving on its own...it's just got to be something man did to cause it.
