In remarks before a United Nations General Assembly summit on non-communicable diseases, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg asserted that a governments highest duty is to ensure that its citizens practice healthy eating.
Bloomberg explicitly rejected what he characterized as minimalist government fantasies that would restrain us from taking obviously needed pro-active steps to eradicate peoples bad habits. The notion that government must stand by idly and abide self-destructive behavior in the name of freedom is simply wrong.
The Mayor argued that the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness expressed in Americas Declaration of Independence are more damaged by irresponsible eating than by anything the government might do. Besides, these incitements to rebellion against England were superceded by the Constitutions promise to promote the general welfare. Nothing is more salient to a persons welfare than the food he or she eats.
While contending that in an ideal world, all meals would be served in government-run dining halls, Bloomberg conceded that government control over what kinds of food are offered in grocery stores and restaurants may be all that we can accomplish in this generation. Still, we must not shirk this responsibility.
In related news, the Obama Administration awarded the State of Oregon a $5 million bonus for signing up the most people for the food stamp program (also known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP). Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack was effusive in praising Oregon for the kind energy and enthusiasm that brings us that much closer to the day when government will ensure that every person is fed.

Since when does an elected official who works for us telling us what to eat, what toilet to buy or what light bulb to put in your house. They’re out of control. Shut the hell up and do the job you were elected to do or we will throw your a##es out. Im sick and tired of listening to all this pompus arrogant I know better than you so Ill pass a law to make you do it dribble.
America has had it too fat and easy for too long for an elected official to make a stupid statement like this. Isn’t the first role of Government to protect the Nation first? Maybe we need to lose a few more wars and maybe suffer occupation and starvation diets until we get it. I shake my head at this and weep for the nation.
You just know the world is laughing at America when they see boobs like Bloomberg make such absurd statements. Most of South America, central American and Mexico and the Arab/Muslim mid East start computing their timetables for their takeover of the USA when they hear idiots like Bloomberg and the traitorous Democrat Party.
Is this guy for real? Wonder if he’s been taken over by some life form from another planet?
Only if we are nothing but SLAVES.
I see Mayor Dumbberg morphing into General Jack Ripper any day now doodling “P.O.E.” (Purity Of Essence) on cocktail napkins everywhere.
If you don’t know what I mean watch Dr. Strangelove again...
I used to think the mayor was off the reservation but now I see that he is just protecting us from ourselves.
So how's that workin' out in N. Korea? Didn't go so well for the Ukrainians when Uncle Joe decided to control their food supply.
Controlling the food supply is a really nifty way to get people to comply with government orders.
I've recently become aware of the campaign by Big Ag to eliminate competition from independent farmers, not a good thing.
It is every citizen’s highest duty to remove every idiotic type of person like this from whatever position of power they occupy.
