From Our Founder: It's Time to Take On Big Coal
Care2.com email

Posted on 12/10/2011 6:00:30 PM PST by matt04

Every day, Care2 members are my inspiration to tackle challenges. You have shown that when we all band together to create change, we can accomplish amazing things. Over the years I've asked you to take on huge issues, and today I am asking you to take on one of the world's biggest problems -- dirty coal energy that poisons the environment, and us.

My children are healthy, which I am grateful for every day. But those of us who live near coal plants or down-stream from a waste site may not be so fortunate. Just because of the food we eat or the water we drink, one in six pregnant women has enough mercury in her system to put her baby at risk. Mercury causes damage to the brain and nervous system, which can lead to developmental problems and learning disabilities. All we want is for our children to be able to grow up healthy, but for some people this is completely out of their hands. That's unfair -- and we can fix it.

The good news is, you can help. We have until December 16 to speak up and support the EPA's plans to better protect families like yours and mine from mercury poisoning. There are some powerful business interests (with a lot of money) who want to stop these protections. But if the entire Care2 community stands with the EPA, that's millions of people whose voices can't be ignored.

This holiday season, I'm thankful so many people care to make a difference. Care2 is now the 150th largest site in the entire US, and we've recently surpassed the spectacular milestones of 17 million members and 80 million petition signatures. If there's anyone that can take on the coal industry and win, it's us!

Please join me in helping America move beyond coal. Thank you.

I live approximately equal distances from a coal fired and a nuclear plant and am perfectly healthy. So are my family and friends, some who have have lived in the area much longer.

I worked in a coal-fired power plant for 14 years. I blew out an ankle working there, but I don’t blame the coal.

I like electricity. If they want to “take on” big coal, they can start by pulling the meter can on their house. That’s what I always tell any anti-coal moron who thinks that solar cells and windmills can satisfy their increasing desire for more and more electricity.

Just how they are gonna save you when the lights and heat go off they don’t know but I’m sure it’s Bush’s fault

All I know is that I don’t want to live among a forest of eyesore windmills. Give me a coal, gas or nuke plant hidden behind a forest and I’ll be happy.

We live surrounded by 4 coal fired plants. All within 15 miles. People here are just as healthy as anyone living other places. The plants have been forced to put in scrubbers time and again and it’s never enough to satisfy the EPA. And my bill is now over $300 a month. I blame the EPA for that. I want to see them taken 10,000 Ft. up and pushed out of a plane. I call them the “destroyers”.

Let them freeze to death in the dark and watch them suddenly ‘warm up’ to coal power.

Care2 members are Luddites. I say let them all starve in the dark. The environmental community are fools on parade. We must push these people and their ilk out of leadership positions that they infest. Our colleges, schools, and government has to be cleansed of them, peacefully if possible, but it must be done.

Snort! I live less than a mile from a coal fired plant! I even worked there for thirty one years! Am in the best of health! None of my illnesses, which were many were caused by anything in the coal or water or air from the power plant!
Many of those who retired with disabilities or died from diseases not related to coal.

Only ONE man retired and later died at 70 years of age from asbestos.
Heck, my old man died at 70 from heart disease and alcoholism and he retired before the plant was ever built!

The power plant has become one of the BEST winter fishing areas in NW Arkansas! Eagles winter here and the area is a deer nesting ground! There were virtually no deer here forty years ago!

They might want to move to the northern reaches of Canada. The air is pristine, the water (when not frozen) is crystal clear, there are few other inhabitants ... an ideal spot for y’all. I’m sure that y’all will revel in the moose sh!t, mosquitoes, summertime swamps, and other environmental attractions. Jobs, probably not a whole lot but you can probably apply for welfare.

These Luddites should be given a tract of pristine land somewhere (someone suggested a remote part of Canada) which is unbesmirched by Evil Civilization and the Blight of Humankind, and be allowed to live out their fantasies of a “natural” life, and leave the rest of us alone with our coal-fired incandescent bulbs.
