My Time at Walmart: Why We Need Serious Welfare Reform
TheCollegeConservative ^ | 12/13/2011 | Christine Rouselle

During the 2010 and 2011 summers, I was a cashier at Wal-Mart #1788 in Scarborough, Maine. I spent hours upon hours toiling away at a register, scanning, bagging, and dealing with questionable clientele. These were all expected parts of the job, and I was okay with it. What I didn’t expect to be part of my job at Wal-Mart was to witness massive amounts of welfare fraud and abuse.

I know it's spectator sport around these parts to attack anyone on a public program but what we see or "know" isn't always the truth. There are people who game the system but we should remind ourselves of the limits of our view into a given case.

The vacation may have been prepaid, a gift, paid by another person or something won in a contest.

Likewise, the "sports car" may belong to another party. The age of the car is also a factor, etc.

If you don’t realize that most of this assistance is bogus - ie, non-essential to life, then you will NOT realize that our and your monies are being spent unnecessarily.

Emergency funds for actual individuals for food and housing is one thing, but providing them with cable TV, Network access, etc. is NOT part of the bargain.

Today, our poor have more than 99% of the rest of the world!

Another Civil War.

You are absolutely right, but guess what would happen if anyone seriously submitted such legislation?

I have a simple plan. Leave the welfraud system as it is except for one thing. That change would be anyone on welfare/EBT for over 5 years is subject to a national lottery. One of these freeloaders would "win" each year. The "winner" would be publicly executed on April 15th. That might put some fear in them.

We should also require implantable contraceptives like Norplant for every female in the household from 13 - 53 to ensure those who say they cannot feed themselves do not create more mouths to feed. The welfare generation stops at that time, while there would soon no longer be the excuse “I can’t work, I’ve got 3 little ones”.

I liked Larry Niven’s universe - dole yeast, free, just enough to keep you alive, didn’t taste good. Motivation to get a job to eat better.

We should require all welfare families, if receiving any form, to have all females in the household between say 13 and 43 to have an injectable contraception like Norplant. As long as they get checks or free food or free medical care, no more pregnancies allowed. If they get their acts together, they can get the implant out and have more children.

All monies allotted for the sole purpose of food go to STAPLE ITEMS ONLY....did I miss anything?

You'd think that our first Lady Mrs. "Healthy Food" Obama could push a plan to restrict what can be bought with food stamps.

Stop raising the income limit on qualifying for 'assistance.' Freeze all levels of government programs and spending.

If you want our money, accept our rules..

I think of this every time someone complains about what WIC won't pay for. I want to yell "BUY IT WITH YOUR OWN MONEY!!!"

Do you believe something like that could work in the 21st century?

Yup. Why not? Gotta work better than dropping cash from airplanes as we do now.

Of course I don’t have a solution. If I did, do you think I’d be on FR half the day?

Don’t have one, just seeing what others say, and giving folks a reason to say something.

Yes, but it still fulfills a necessary purpose, one that decent, modern govts are essentially required to fill.

nothing in life is free, we do have a responsibility to those that truly need help.
