Running Windows XP on Dell GX-280. Have Realtek RTL series wireless internet USB plug installed. When I reboot the computer, the wireless connection fails and I have to re-enter the network setup and re-enter the wireless password key again to reconnect. Sometimes several times.
How can I prevent this from happening? I have tried both with the firewall active and deactivated.
Thanks.

Go to Network and Sharing Center, then go into the “Change Order of Preferred Networks” and delete the Wireless Network you connect to (this has all the attributes).
Then re-connect to the network, re-enter the password and tell the system to reconnect.
This should make it permanent...

How old is the router? If it’s 18 months old then buy a new one. We just went through something similar. Whateer you do, don’t call the machine’s tech service or you’ll end up with someone worse than Peggy.

Wireless antennas burn out after a while. Ive gone through several. As an RF engineer with 24 years experience, I don't believe that.
Next one that "burns out", FReepmail me, and I will pay shipping to get it to me. I will take it to my lab at work and test it.

OK, I’ll try to help. Windows XP has some problems with wireless, especially when Service Pack 2 and 3 are used (which is just about all).
Go to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 87112 and read it. In that article you will see a small window called FixIt. Click that window and Save the downloaded file, which should be a *.msi file, forgot the exact name. Run this file on your XP computer and the wireless should connect immediately. Save this file since you may have to re-run it especially if you re-boot your computer. If you do re-boot, run the file again to connect easily. Hope this helps you!
