Hands Off My Fries: A Philosophical Objection to "Nudging" in the Food Industry
The College Conservative ^ | Wednesday, January 4th, 2012 | Amy Lutz

Every once in a while, I can’t resist indulging in a sleeve of hot, crispy McDonald’s French fries. Not even Michelle Obama can resist the attractive allure of the crispy spuds. However, that doesn’t stop her from trying to curb the desires of her fellow Americans. I can only assume that the First Lady’s stint in office will long be characterized by her perpetual battle against America’s increasing waistline. Her attempt to halt the increasing health concerns of overweight Americans is certainly a noble cause, but her methods (unsurprisingly) are not always acceptable within the confines of a classical liberal society.

When a conservative believes that it is dangerous to ride a bicycle without a helmet, he chooses to wear a helmet.

When a liberal/planner believes that it is dangerous to ride a bicycle without a helmet, he tries to get a law passed requiring all bike riders to wear helmets.

The latter is repulsive to any student of the US constitution. It is also downright un-American.

I guess it’s tradition for the First Lady to have some cause she espouses. Just Say No to Drugs... I think Laura Bush’s thing was literacy... Hilary’s was health care. But it sure would be refreshing to see a First Lady who has no cause other than raising her kids, decorating the White House, and being gracious at parties. I mean, isn’t that enough?

Look to the lengths the anti-smoking zealots have gone to see where we are headed in government control of what we eat.
Without question taxes on fast food are just around the corner using the same health arguments used to tax and limit cigarettes. Of course this has nothing to do with health...just a new way to tax us and give liberal elites more control over our lives.

True enough. However, I think that the title of "First Lady" gives a good bully pulpit to do some good.

Laura Bush chose literacy. Nancy Reagan chose "just say no to drugs". Both worthy causes, IMHO, and ones that allow people to make a choice to improve themselves.

Interesting that Hillary! and Moochelle both chose causes (Health Care and Obesity) that allow *them* to dictate what they think is best for everyone.

Insight into the differences between how libs and conservatives think.

“Nudging” is ‘code’ for “manipulate”.

There IS a solution to liberal tampering with enjoyable food - it's simple. Liberals would like it - and we'd like it. The 100% solution.

Liberals get together - find a backer - say George Soros - someone with lots of money - and open their own place. They could serve apples with McLean burgers (tasteless burgers made with seaweed - a food they forced on McDonalds years ago) and fries cooked in something so healthy that they're almost inedible. Maybe tofu cookies... Liberals who like tasteless healthy food have their own place - all 25 of them in various cities - and George Soros can keep dumping money into the place until he's broke. That effectively ends his reign of control freak terror over the culture - aided by his rich man "I can force anything down your throats with my money" crapola...

Conservatives get the pleasure of eating without guilt - knowing a liberal alternative is available to health nuts, control freaks and Occupy idiots... AND Soros goes broke. Everyone's happy...

In Maine, the state sales tax is 5%.

However, on fast food drive through restaurants, the
sales tax is 7%.

The left LOVE the word CHOICE specifically when referring to ‘reproductive rights’.

However, CHOICE is no longer valid when it comes to issues the left deem worthy of ‘government intervention for the public good’.

Hypocrites and they know it.

Those fries would be a lot healthier if they were cooked in animal fat the way they used to be instead of the manufactured oils we use now.

Plus they would taste even better.

A couple of years back while visiting some timber holdings in PA and needing to get back to New Hampshire, the weather forced us to park the plane at Wilkes Barre and drive.

We stopped at a McDonalds to grab something quick.

My question, how can anyone eat that junk? I was nauseous for thirty miles. Coffee was good, but no raw sugar, no honey and no raw milk, but black coffee isn’t that bad.

You don’t have to be poor and lazy to eat that stuff, you have to be an idiot or suicidal.

I don’t doubt it. I remember reading an article in Food & Wine a while back in which the author detailed his “rediscovery” of lard. Among other things, he noted that french fries cooked in lard (btw, he rendered his own) were much tastier and had a more appealing texture than those cooked in vegetable oil.
