Will Mitt Romney Repeal Obamacare?

* Does a President have that authority?

* By: Larry Walker, Jr. *

In his Nevada victory speech, Mitt Romney once again publicly declared, “I will repeal Obamacare”. How so? Will Willard Mitt Romney single-handedly repeal Obamacare?

Although I am in favor of repealing Obamacare, and replacing it with a free-market solution, the last time I checked the Constitution, I wasn’t able to locate any passage granting the President of the United States the sole authority for repealing any law. Frankly I’m tired of hearing the same old false promise over and over again.

The truth is that in order to repeal or amend any federal legislation, Congress is required to follow the same procedures used in passing any new legislation. In other words, a new bill must be introduced by Congress either repealing or amending the existing law, and then it must pass both Houses of Congress, before being signed by the President.

So although the currently Republican controlled House of Representatives would favor repeal, the Democratic controlled Senate would not. And unless the Republican Party is able to win the presidency, along with a substantial majority in the Senate, while maintaining its present majority in the House; Mitt Romney won’t be repealing anything (i.e. He won’t be signing any repeal legislation.). As far as I’m concerned it’s just words.

What's disheartening is that while Romney has made this bold proclamation publicly, literally hundreds of times, offstage as Ben Domenech notes in his Transom, Mitt Romney’s advisors have now advised him to support not repealing Obamacare. Norm Coleman, an advisor to Romney, went on record saying:

“We’re not going to do repeal. You’re not going to repeal Obamacare… It’s not a total repeal… You will not repeal the act in its entirety, but you will see major changes, particularly if there is a Republican president… You can’t whole-cloth throw it out. But you can substantially change what’s been done.”

Now I took Romney’s ridiculous blurb about fixing any holes in the safety net that exists for the very poor, for whom he is otherwise unconcerned, as a joke. Thanks Mitt, for keeping the very poor out of the way, and in everlasting poverty [sarcasm]! But his ongoing pandering plea to conservatives, that giving him the nomination will somehow empower a president Romney to repeal Obamacare, or any other law, is outright dishonest.

It’s hard to see how Romney’s practice of discrediting Newt Gingrich, alienating hundreds of thousands of Reagan conservatives in the process, can aid in the party’s winning or maintaining substantial majorities in both houses of Congress, let alone winning the presidency. I haven’t heard Romney mention anything about that. All I’ve heard him ramble on lately is what he will do by his lonesome, whether or not it’s reasonably possible, or even constitutional.

But aside from that, in the remote possibility that Republicans were able to win substantial majorities in both Houses along with a Romney presidency, what would a Romney Administration replace Obamacare with? Wouldn’t we just wind up with fifty state-run Romneycare’s?

Talk is cheap. Dishonesty is worthless.

That’s right, lie to us Mitt. For we must defeat Obama at all costs – even if that means deceiving and destroying the Conservative movement, in the process. Will a real conservative please stand up and challenge this walking disaster before it’s too late?

Obamacare will not be repealed. Big business (Wall Street and multinational corporations plus private equity firms) want to eliminate the cost of employee medical care much like they eliminated defined benefit pension plans in the 1990’s. The savings are huge to eliminate company paid medical insurance, even if a company pays the $2000 per employee penalty for not having a medical plan. Romney knows this and Newt knows this.

The fix is already in. Boehner and his Republican majority have not even attempted to defund Obamacare through the appropriations process despite having public support for repeal. Any attempt at repeal if the Republicans win the Senate in 2012 will be filibustered to death by the Dems. Plus if Obama wins the election he will certainly veto any repeal legislation. Finally, Mitch McConnell is an establishment tool. As long as he leads Republicans in the Senate he will collaborate behind the scenes with Reid to kill repeal in the Senate.

Sorry, no matter what Newt and Romney say, the big buck doners want Obamacare and will get it. The elites know what is good for us and will make sure we have it no matter what we say. The bailout of Wall Street in 2008 demonstrated that political power in this nation no longer resides with te people.

Without a 60 seat Senate it’s a pointless argument.

If Mittens is nominated, Obamacare will be permanently off the table for duration of election.

This is a moot issue.

Obama will be reelected.

The GEE-OH-PEE has no intention of winning the Presidency this year. The very thought of having the power to make real change scares the s**t out of all the RINOs in Congress.

The only thing of significance that will occur with a Romney nomination and subsequent loss in the general election is that some pundit careers will be irreparably damaged (e.g., Ann Coulter) and some news organizations will be exposed for what they really are (e.g., Fox News).

Since it looks like Mitt will be the nominee, we need to pin him down on repealing Obamacare in it's entirety.

Santorum could, in a debate, say Mitt, I will decide to drop out tonight and throw my support behind you, if and only if you commit to repeal Obamacare entirety at this moment, a moment we will hold you to.

As it stands now, didn't the last federal appeals court rule ObamaCare illegal and is now before the Supreme Court?

I wasn't dreaming was I, that did happen, huh?

Yet, everyone acts like it didn't.

Romney, the PROVEN LIAR, installed RomneyCARE/ObamaCARE.

Anyone who thinks he will remove it IS A FOOL.

The GOP is finished.
Because of Romney, the DNC will rule America forever.

Perhaps the best hope for America is that Obamacare is declared unconstitutional.

I have not studied Romneycare in detail. So I can’t really make any substantive comments on whether it is good or bad. The question comes to mind is why have the voters in Massachusetts not rejected Romneycare, long after he is gone from governorship?

My guess is MA is a very blue state. Perhaps that is why. I am a big believer in the 10th Amendment. If some other states wish to adopt versions of Romneycare, I have no problem with it. It is the state’s right. One can always move to another state. Obamacare OTOH is a national plan and is unconsitutional.

You REALLY need to research Romneycare.

They rejected it so quickly Romney knew better than to run for relection after it was passed.

The smart ones are fleeing MA.

Rejected? I thought Romneycare is still in force in MA??

[Perhaps the best hope for America is that Obamacare is declared unconstitutional.]

If that's our best hope, then as Patrick Henry said, "Our chains are forged". Although before that sentence he said, “There is no retreat but in submission and slavery". I think we need to nix Mitt, and latch onto one of the other three, yes, I said three. One of them may be our best hope.

It is. But the people are not happy with it and rejected it and Romney once they found the devil in the details.
