Rick Santorum Has A Women Problem. But Does Mitt Romney Have A Problem With Men? By Mike Smithson February 26th, 2012
Since a lacklustre performance in the Republican candidates' CNN debate on Wednesday night, Rick Santorum has seen his poll numbers fall ahead of Tuesday's Michigan and Arizona primaries. In surveys carried out after the event, Mitt Romney improved his position against Santorum by an average of about 4%.
This has led the electoral and polling expert at the New York Times, Nate Silver, to project that Santorum now has just a 33% chance of winning Michigan and only an 11% chance of triumphing in the winner-takes-all Arizona primary.
But there was – amidst the general gloom – one survey of likely Arizona primary voters which had Santorum improving on his position ten days earlier. The American Research Group put him just four points behind in the state, suggesting that he might have a fighting chance.
An aspect of the polling detail, however, highlighted a trend that we have seen in many surveys during the past month: Santorum is doing reasonably well with male voters but he is miles behind with women.
Thus in the ARG survey, Santorum led Romney by 43% to 32% with the men in the sample, while Romney led Santorum by 47% to 26% with the women.
Gender gaps are not unusual in political polling but it is rare to see one so large. This looks as though Santorum's opposition to contraception and his traditional views on the role of women is having a big impact.
The contraception issued featured strongly in Wednesday's debate.

Newt would rather see Romney nominated than withdraw. So would Saint Rick.
He did it to himself with his hapless commentary.
At least Gingrich proved he could beat Romney is an actualy Primary with delegates at stake.
To the best of my knowlege all Santorum has won is either two states with caucus or another 3 without ANY delegates at stake...you know, those that count for nothing.
This race is still wide open and anyone could win it.
Have you seen Gingrich’s poll numbers in MI, AZ, WA, PA, AL, TN? He is not even in the top two.
There might be something to that.
Remember in the polygamist communities, the girls are/were glommed onto young, by elder males to join their ... harems for lack of a better word.
Some of the young men, were actually banished.
Those other men, were to those harem-building elders (rather like the GOPe) competition.
To be opposed, or very least marginalized as competition.
You spend a lot of time bashing Santorum.
Just saying.
Santorum is a loser, and lose he will — in Michigan as well as Arizona.
For all the hoopla about his “surge”, he has won essentially nothing so far.

Gingrich had a cakewalk next to the beating Santorum is taking and you know what? Santorum’s still smiling.
Although I supported him, Gingrich is the one who is over. He needs to salvage his dignity and withdraw to defeat Romney. He needs to show some class and endorse Santorum just like Perry did for him. Not much difference in their numbers.
I wish people don’t become detached from the real world when they summarize poll statistics. Are you saying the men that do support Romney or the woman who do support Rick aren’t really men or female?

Currently, Romney has 112 delegates, and Santorum has 72.
Gingrich’s sole contribution to all of this is to ensure Romney gets nominated.
Absolutely on point. This would have been an uphill task for Romney, if Gingrich had seen the handwriting on the wall after Santorum’s spectacular trifecta and withdrawn. The bulk of Gingrich’s nearly all male voters would have moved onto the Santorum column. No question in my mind that if Romney pulls off victories in AZ and MI, he needs to send Gingrich a bouquet of roses, at least.
How is he polling in TN, AL, PA, OK, TX, etc.?
If you mean that Santorum lacks that ruthless attack instinct and willingness to use underhanded tactics to “win” by tearing down every other candidate starting from even as far back as turning against Sarah Palin - resulting in Obama’s victory - in order not to have to face her as an opponent this year.
Yes I agree Santorum’s not that sort of guy. He’s sort of simple about things.
Romney is simple too, except he’s just about one thing:
Mitt Romney isn’t about any particular belief, Mitt Romney isn’t about any sort of position.
Mitt Romney isn’t left or right.
He’s not about Patriotism, or capitalism.
Mitt Romney, is about Mitt Romney.
Mittens has a problem with me and all conservative women.
Presumably Santorum has a problem with NOW type women, who support “a woman’s right to abortion,” and all the rest of that leftist agenda.
Presumably Newt has a problem with women who are concerned about his multiple affairs and divorces. Maybe he has now seen the light and straightened out, but there is a lot of stuff there for the media to use against him.
The first group of women are mostly going to vote Democrat, anyway. But if the second group of women turn against the candidate, then the candidate is in trouble, because those are conservative votes that we need to win.
Yes, the media are hitting Rick hard, and lying about his positions to make him seem like something out of the Inquisition. But he can, and will, hit back—right where Obama is vulnerable, as an extremist abortion-lover who never saw a baby he didn’t want to kill. Contrary to what the women at NOW or Planned Parenthood may say, that is not a popular position with a majority of voters. Obama never would have been elected if McCain had pushed him on those issues. But McCain was never really strong on them to begin with. And he refused to attack Hussein on anything.

FRiend, you might as well be asking “Which way will the wind blow tomorrow, next week, next month?”
Would you like for us to talk about your candidate like you do Santorum? This is nothing new, I’ve seen it since Newt urged Santorum to quit.
Electability for any of these four is an assertion without data.
Gingrich won’t win anything outside Dixie, and if he loses any of those, he should withdraw and support Rick.
Let the flaming begin.
