Need help with **another** problem (computers this time)

I sincerely apologize for taking up so much time from fellow FReepers, but now my computer is acting up. I'm hoping I want have to have the thing wiped clean and Windows reinstalled, but I am not a tecchie and have no idea what to do.

My problem is with one of those frequent and usually welcome security updates heralded by the little yellow shield with the exclamation mark. I got this earlier today and it told me three updates were ready to be installed. So I installed them.

Problem: the little yellow shield comes back on every time I log on the computer with the same three updates. Similarly, every time I log off it "installs" the same three updates. It does this over and over and over and over and OVER. How do I clear this out of my system? How do I install them for good and all or else make the shield and the installation-on-exit cease?

Please use non-technical English as much as possible.

Thank you.

I have since logged of and rebooted, and it didn't reinstall on powering down or ask me to click on the shield icon when I logged back on. So hopefully that's the end of this particular problem. Thanks again to MestaMachine.

Next time you get an update from Microsoft, take the time to follow it through. Read the messages.

Don't just go and perform some other operation while the installation window is minimized. When it asks you to click on "Install" the message also includes a note that you can bring the installation window back up by clicking on the little yellow shield icon while the installation is taking place. Do that, and just sit and observe the what happens in the window while this is going on.

When the installation finishes, usually another window comes up informing you that you must restart the machine so that the changes made will become incorporated in the operating system.

This means you must, right then, allow the machine to be shut down, right back to the initial boot up phase. If you select the option not to do it right then, you need soon, after postponing, to close down your other programs, go to "Start", click on "Turn off computer" (NOT the "Log off" button), click on "Restart" or "Turn Off", and allow the machine to shut down.

As an observation, not a criticism, your predicament probably results from
(1) not having taken the time to learn how your operating system works; and
(2) not reading, understanding, and implementing the messages your operating system gives you.

If you want to escape the cost of technical attention your system needs, you must learn how to do some of it yourself. Otherwise, it would be thoughtful to remunerate others who eke out a little sustenance by fixing computers.

Asking posters on this site for advice will get you a mixed bag of suggestions, not all of them worthwhile.

Your best bet is to make friends with a PC technician in your area, who can at least talk you through the steps to solve a problem over the phone. If you can, pay him for the help. We all have to live.

Respectfully --

Thank you all, it still says my wireless has been disabled....I just can’t get into a place to correct the problem. Lan or Wlan....whatever that is doesn’t give me the option. My switch on this HP is at the top of the keys next to the on/off switch. Right now it is an orange color & if I push on it, nothing happens. I think I accidentally turned it off when I was deleting some recent additions I had made. I was afraid I had removed the whole wireless option, is that possible?

Thank you for your advice.

In this particular update (which is unusual) there was no instruction or question about rebooting the computer at all. It simply said "updates have been installed." Nevertheless, it reinstalled each and every time I turned the computer back on (and when I turned it off).

There must have been some sort of glitch in this particular update. It has been taken care of now (I hope).

Thank you again.

So here’s another trick but you have to be confident in your abilities to recover. However, at this point it’s probably moot.

I’ve had things like this happen and here is how I resolved it:

Go to “Device Manager” and open it.

Then look down to “Network Adapters”

Double click it and two adapters will show up. An Ethernet adapter and a Wireless Adapter.

Right Click on Wireless Adapter and here you will have some options:

Update Driver Software
Disable
Uninstall

1st I’d update the driver if possible. If you can’t don’t worry about it.

Next, I’d go ahead and disable the Wireless Adapter, then reboot.

Upon full reboot(go get a cup of coffee) I’d go back to Device Manager, look down at Network Adapters, On the Wireless Adapter Right Click, “Enable” and again reboot(get more coffee)

See if that works, if it doesn’t then you want uninstall the Wireless Network Adapter and reinstalling it as simple as going back to Device Manager, Right Click on Network Adapters, Scan for Hardware changes and eventually it will find your Wireless Adapter and you can reinstall it.

If none of those work, it’s beyond my capabilities to help as I would need to be in front of your computer to diagnose/repair it.

This is the most understandable instructions I have ever seen. But you know me, I am not finding what you say is there. Under device manager, network adapters....the only thing I see is: Realtek PCle Family Controller & it says it is working properly. I did the search for hardware changes & did not find anything that way. Thanks for your help but I think I will have to ask my brother/in/law to go over this for me. Have a good week!

I am back, just to let you know today when I booted up my laptop, my wireless is working. It is a miracle!! I spent 2 days doing as you instructed & as you said, “go get a cup of coffee” etc. Finally worked as I had totally given up on my wireless. Thank you so much, you give great instructions!!
