Reminder: President George H. W. Bush Regretted Raising Taxes
ATR ^ | 2012-07-13 | Paul Blair

In 1990, President George H. W. Bush was promised two dollars in spending cuts for every one dollar in tax hikes. He fell for the bait and violated his Pledge to not raise taxes. After a $137 billion tax hike, spending actually rose by $22 billion.

As a reminder, he regretted breaking his Pledge to oppose higher taxes after he realized he got tricked into letting it happen.

Sadly, “I’m sorry because I got caught,” is a huge M.O.

Boehner should have take the deal when they asked for 10 to 1 spending cuts for each dollar tax increase- but ONLY if they did the spending cuts first

Maybe, rather than saying as he did, “Who the hell is Grover Norquist?” he should have said, “I should have listened to Grover Norquist...”

He fell for the bait and violated his Pledge to not raise taxes.

"Fell for the bait"? Really? Look at how ALL republican administrations since Reagan have piled on spending, more entitlement programs, unelected and unaccountable alphabet agencies, and screwed up the taxes and rates so badly that half don't pay Federal taxes, all to grow Federal power and control.

Fell for it? Stop lying to yourself and to us. It's who they are. It's what they do.

You know what? "It's Bush's Fault" has a ring of truth to it.

If you are grown up enough to run for president, you should be mature enough to know that Democrats lie. That’s what they do.

For this one thing I hate George H.W. Bush more than anything else. He did a lot of other very stupid things, but it is for this one thing that he deserves a mountain of blame. It is on the basis of this one thing that he did that Bill Clinton became President.

Bill Clinton was the most pathological liar (till now) that ever ran for President. He lied constantly and he lied big. He lied about anything and everything. He was in essence, nothing but a liar, and had the depth and scope of his lying been pointed out continuously in 2008, it is very doubtful that he could have defaulted the election with a plurality.

Why wasn't his constant lying pointed out? Because the very minute George Bush would have tried to mention that Bill Clinton was a pathological liar, and that everything he said was a lie, the Media would have trotted out their video of George Herbert Walker Bush making a promise. "Read my lips. No new Taxes!"

George Bush could not call Clinton a pathological liar, because George Bush broke his solemn word not to raise taxes, and would therefore be demonized as a liar and a hypocrite.

What makes it even worse is the fact that THE STUPIDEST IDIOT in the conservative ranks would have realized that this was nothing but a trick by the Democrats to screw him later. It was NEVER INTENDED to do anything about the deficit. Democrats do not care about the deficit. It was only intended to destroy the credibility of George H.W. Bush. Nothing else.

For God's sake, they had done EXACTLY the same thing to Ronald Reagan. (Though he had not promised to not raise taxes.) The Democrats Promised Ronald Reagan $3.00 in reduced spending for every dollar raised in new taxes. Reagan reluctantly gave them a chance, and they simply spent more without cutting any spending. As Ronald Reagan said:

"The Democrats reneged on their pledge and we never got those cuts."

The lesson to be learned? Democrats are LIARS, and they will screw over a moderate President even harder than they will try to screw over a Conservative President. If they did it to Reagan, what on Earth made George Bush think that they wouldn't do it to him too?

Idiot.

You make the point well. It helped make sure that Clinton won in 1992.

President Reagan cut the top marginal tax rate from 70% in 1980 to 28% in 1988.

The inflation rate decreased from 13.58% in 1980 to 1.91% in 1986.

16 million jobs were created during his 8 years and economic growth was fantastic.

President Reagan cut funding for Medicaid, Food Stamps and the EPA. He didn’t create any new social programs.

I wonder if Romney is going to be sorry for raising taxes. I bet he is going to vote for a tax rate hike sometime during his term. He seems very weak and will not fight Congress to cut spending and raise taxes.

Exactly. And what essentially has become the Bush reign took over and changed all of that and look where we and the republican party are now.

And doncha just know the GOPe will fix it all again for us with Romney?

I can't think of another alphabet agency we don't already have, but I'm sure they'll "surprise" us with several.

And if they don't, obama II will.

Regardless of who wins and we lose, maybe we'll finally agree it's time for a third option: an opposing political party.

If there was ever a true indicator of just how repulsive the Bushes are, it was when G.H.W. Bush and Jeb Bush visited Obama in the White Hut.

After 3 years of listening and watching Obama stab their son and brother in the back, they went to the White House and yukked it up with the most juvenile, petulant, incapable, unqualified, lying POS to ever disgrace the Oval Office.

Bush: syn.pathetic, milquetoast, reprobate.
