GOP pros fret over Paul Ryan (all the right people are nervous!)
Politico ^

Posted on 08/14/2012 5:41:08 AM PDT by cotton1706

You’ve heard them on television and read them on POLITICO — cheerful, defiant statements from Republican political professionals about Mitt Romney’s bold masterstroke in tapping Paul Ryan as his running mate, and turning the 2012 presidential race into a serious, far-reaching debate about budgets and the nation’s future.

Don’t buy it.

Away from the cameras, and with all the usual assurances that people aren’t being quoted by name, there is an unmistakable consensus among Republican operatives in Washington: Romney has taken a risk with Ryan that has only a modest chance of going right — and a huge chance of going horribly wrong.

In more than three dozen interviews with Republican strategists and campaign operatives — old hands and rising next-generation conservatives alike — the most common reactions to Ryan ranged from gnawing apprehension to hair-on-fire anger that Romney has practically ceded the election.

It is not that the public professions of excitement about the Ryan selection are totally insincere. It is that many of the most optimistic Republican operatives will privately acknowledge that their views are being shaped more by fingers-crossed hope than by a hard-headed appraisal of what’s most likely to happen.

And the more pessimistic strategists don’t even feign good cheer: They think the Ryan pick is a disaster for the GOP. Many of these people don’t care that much about Romney — they always felt he faced an improbable path to victory — but are worried that Ryan’s vocal views about overhauling Medicare will be a millstone for other GOP candidates in critical House and Senate races.

Read between the lines and you see that the moderates are not happy, the establishment is not happy. They were pushing a dullard like Portman or Pawlenty or their co-opted man: Rubio. "Why didn't Romney listen to Jeb Bush, our new kingmaker??" they're screaming. Gives me even more hope.

Move over Mitch McConnell! There are a slew of real conservatives on their way to your precious body, and a new PRESIDENT of the senate, to keep you in line! And John Boehner, see the result of bold, unyielding leadership, not timidness in a House member!

Nobody important. Various “consultants” and “advisors.” We know who the people are that don’t like conservatives and love moderates. There’s another articla on Politico entitled “Boehner walks a fine line on Ryan.” I didn’t bother reading it. But the intent is clear. Politico is a liberal rag and mouthpiece, but the establishment reads it and the consultants read it. They’re always trying to make establishment republicans nervous about conservatives. It’s better to support the democrat than that awful conservative, they’ll say.

Unfortunately for them, the people are paying absolutely no attention as we can see from Mourdock, Cruz, etc. And Romney just picked Ryan, a fearless, movement conservative, not a go-along compromiser. The establishment of both sides thought they were so smart in pushing Romney on us. They’re probably wondering what the hell’s going on.

“I think it’s a very bold choice. And an exciting and interesting pick. It’s going to elevate the campaign into a debate over big ideas. It means Romney-Ryan can run on principles and provide some real direction and vision for the Republican Party. And probably lose. Maybe big,” said former President George W. Bush senior adviser Mark McKinnon.

He's barely a RINO, he's a huge Bloomberg for President delusionist.

Here we go again. The "unamed" "Republican" sources trashing the Conservative, just like they did to Sarah Palin. These RINO jerks are setting Ryan (the Conservative) up to be the fall-guy in the event anything goes askew.

These guys need to be found and taken out - NOW - before their venom once again infects everything and gives us Obama - again!

Of course they’re making it up. They’re trying to influence legislators. They want to prevent conservatives from getting any traction and they want incumbent legislators to be nervous about espousing conservatism so they appear weak and get defeated by democrats. It’s the same old game.

With Ryan on the ticket, an unabashed, articulate conservative, we may be in for a sweep of epic proportions.

Any political steps away from the Bush family are steps worth taking.

I don't know about the rest of America, but I've long since tired of political dynasties like the Kennedy family or the Bush family.

Are these all the beltway folks who were begging Ryan to run for president?

If you’re taking fire, you’re over the Target.

Thanks for the details. I really hate the consultancy class in DC...both sides equally. It makes me want to box up my stuff and fly up there to open my own consultant office. I have a much greater accuracy rating when it comes to picking winners and losers, that’s for sure.

If freedom is to survive, people like Paul Ryan will lead the way. This is a contest between tyranny and freedom, nothing else. The economy, lack of jobs, chaos, illegals and entitlements are only symptoms of the cancer of corruption which has infected us for too long. The cure comes in getting back to self-governance and understanding that the government which has the power to give you everything will do that only until communism is set in place, then they will take everything you have, even your children..Finding the place to not feel helpless in the face of the great evils threatening to engulf us is not easy. We have a majority of good people here in America. We are big hearted, loving and kind for the most part and we want a fair and just society where everyone gets an opportunity to learn to whatever extent he/she can. Good, decent, smart people like Paul Ryan who refuse to play the corrupt Washington games will be very abused, mostly through the government surrogates. I could not believe that Candy Crowley, CNN leftist and Bob Schieffer, CBS leftist are going to be debate moderators. Folks, this is the big problem. These people do NOT reflect America. They come from somewhere else, morally and socially. They are the super rich and want it hidden. They want to be the LORDS and they want you to be the SERFS. Paul Ryan, contrary to the lies they will tell you, does not want Medicare changed for the elderly now receiving it. He wants to save it for his generation through changes which must occur now for future recipients. Otherwise, your children can forget it because it will go under and will not be available for them. Please WAKE UP and stop listening to the lies of the leftist surrogate media conglomerates. This is the election which will determine what kind of government system we will live under for, perhaps, all time to come.

I had read elsewhere with amusement that even some Romney advisors were not happy with the choice of Paul Ryan. Likely the same sort of advisors that trashtalked Sarah Palin. GOOD! I hope they get their hats (and a$$es) handed to them. Looks like Romney can think on his own feet...I consider this selection of Ryan to be the best decision he has made. The young guns are coming, one by one, office by office. Be it Walker, Cruz, West, Scott, even Scott Brown..the American people are fed up with the lack of leadership on both sides..Paul Ryan is a perfect example of what needs to happen on a national scale.

One thing is for certain. With the advent of the Ryan pick, it isn’t the gope in charge anymore. Romney actually went rogue on them and did this all by himself...and the establishment hasn’t a clue how to handle it. Now all they can do is bite their tongues and quietly pull their hair out as they kiss their arses goodbye.
