Big Orange Book Festival at Chapman, September 21-22; Go Heckle Conservative Blowhard Mark Levin

By Dan Chmielewski

A postcard from our friends at Chapman University came in for the Big Orange Book Festival on the Chapman campus September 21-22. While the event looks like its a knock off of the LA Times Festival of Books, the promoted authoris include conservatiev radio host Mark Levin, a WABC host Sean Hannity often refers to as “The Great One,” expect I believe the correct spelling is “The Grate One.”

Levin’s been one of the biggest critics of the Obama administration and once made a bad joke a few years ago to Alec Baldwin when Baldwin called into the Hannity Show calling Baldwin “Brokeback Alec” so homophobia aside, Levin’s new book is “Ameritopia: The Unmaking of America,” Levin thinks under Democratic rule that

America is headed off a clift. Levin is clearly part of the “take the country back” crowd when so many of us on the left want to move the country forward.

Levin’s not your cup of tea? Lizz Winstead, Alice Sebold, Sapphire, David Anspaugh and OC Weekly’s Gustavo Arellano will be there. For more information on the event, go to www.BigOrangeBookFestival.com. The event features more than 100 authors and will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film “To Kill a Mockingbird” from the novel by Harper Lee.

Was anyone able to attend Mark Levin's presentation at the book festival? I was unable to attend, but I visited the festival later in the day. There was nothing much of interest for conservatives, but the Muslims and a pacifist group had booths.

LOL! Eleanor, perhaps? Seriously, go heckle Mark Levin if you want. It'll be like taking a knife to a gun fight.

My youngest son graduated from Chapman last year.. Being a conservative at any university has most kids keeping their personal opinions under wrap, Chapman Univ, isn’t as bad as most, especially in California..

Early on, he established his Conservative credentials and met the wrath of his liberal professors, as well as the female activist, but he stood his ground.. However, after 4 years of battling he said it really wasn’t worth it, all it did was make it harder to get a fair grade..

Thank heavens it’s finally in the rear view mirror..

I wish there could be a bigger conservative presence at these book festivals. Not one conservative publishing house or author showed up at the Los Angeles Festival of books last April--but the Musiims and various leftist groups always show up.

I was there. Mark was just okay as he basically read from his book. But he had his trademark sense of humor and it was pretty much packed seating in a very large venue. Great people were there; he was received very enthusiastically with lots of standing ovations.

Chapman is a beautiful university. It was a lovely day there. There were about 30 booths, it was pretty small, which I liked.

There was the Islam booth, several were selling used books, a credit union, and a couple where no one even showed up. I suspect the festival will be more active tomorrow. At least three people had purchased booths to hawk their own books. I purchased a book written (as told to) by Carolyn Sherman-Collins. What a fantastic and interesting lady she is. Here’s the Amazon link to her book:

I look forward to reading her book.

Another booth was manned by David Paul Collins who was selling his book, Shanghaied and I regret not purchasing it and may go back tomorrow to get it. Here’s the Amazon link for it:

I believe this was the first year for this festival; next year it should be even better.

Why bother with the festivals when it’s conservative books/authors that are always at the top of the best sellers lists?

Conservatives need to stop being the "silent majority." They need to show the flag more often and be visible in the arena.

We live in California, and my son is a freshman in college. Originally Chapman and UC Davis were high on his list. However, last year he changed his mind and decided to go to my alma mater, Texas A&M.

He likes the school, and he likes that there are lots of conservatives. However, he is homesick according to his friends.

I’m guessing he’ll get over being homesick, but it may take a while to make new friends.

That’s probably easier to fix than being in a very liberal California university.

We live near Davis,Ca and have much time spent in Davis. I have a great respect for the quality of education available ,note the word available, at UofC Schools. I am a graduate of Berkeley many years ago with a top notch science education. I have also had association with UofC Davis profs. Prior to going to Cal I was set to go to the UofTexas but a foul up in the mail application made my decision. No regrets since. As things are today at Cal Colleges and what I understand to be at Texas colleges the UofCal would be my decision between the two systems. It would take a lot of personal discipline to keep on the academic path though.

I was there after work to hear Mary Badham, “Scout” from To Kill A Mockingbird, talk about the experience of making the movie. They showed the film after her talk. It was great!

I think we would have liked him to go closer to home.

He really wanted out of California. He’s tired of being a conservative in a liberal land.

Also, he’s majoring in economics and the program at A&M is very flexible.

He wants to be an economic analyst for the CIA. Supposedly, A&M and Harvard are the top 2 colleges the CIA recruits from.

He was an academic admit to A&M, and he knew when he got his ACT scores back last summer that he was autmatically in. I thought it was his back up school in case he didn’t get into the UCs.

However, once he got into the the UCs, they just kept on moving down on his list every time he visited there. Then he went back to A&M in April, and it moved to the top of his list. Really, it was the only school on his list after that.

However, I think he underestimated how hard it was going to be so far away from home. He likes the school, but is homesick.
