Study Links Autism to High Fructose Corn Syrup
Autism Key Bulletin Board ^ | Posted on April 14, 2012 | Gary Porter

A new study released this past week has once again linked the consumption of processed foods to health complications, giving food safety advocates even more cause for concern. The April 10th publication of the Clinical Epigenetics Journal reported a link between high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and autism in the United States. According to the study, the rise in autism rates "is not related to mercury exposure from fish, coal-fired power plants, thimerosal, or dental amalgam but instead to the consumption of HFCS.”

The study, led by former FDA toxicologist and whistleblower Renee Dufault, found that a deficiency of zinc, triggered by the consumption of HFCS and other processed foods, interferes with the body’s ability to eliminate toxins such as mercury and pesticides.

High fructose corn syrup has long been suspected of having an adverse impact on health and has been purportedly linked to obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and liver disease. The fructose-laden ingredient has even been reported to facilitate the growth of cancer cells.

Dufault made news in 2009 with another study (which was referenced in these new findings), also linking high fructose corn syrup to mercury. Many HFCS proponents and some in the autism community will immediately (and predictively) discount these new findings, but regardless, they still warrant further research.

With autism rates now at a mind-blowing 1 in 88, there are many who are desperately looking for a definitive cause and a silver bullet theory. Whether or not there is something to these new findings remains to be seen, but we must not give up on our quest for the truth.

If you get it set up, freepmail me the link. I’d like to see sermons geared toward “aspies”. More logic, less hugging.

“Our son has a mental illness. Church people have historically been the most hateful and vicious to him.”

I am sorry that church people have hurt your family. It depends on the church, but some churches seem to breed legalists who are anything but loving. Not all churches are like that. (I hope mine won’t be!)

I would like to know more. Perhaps knowing what your son went through I could prevent the same from happening to someone else.

Wasn’t there a recent study that pointed to the increased age of men having children? Waiting too long to have children definitely fits a more affluent educated demographic. Google “autism men age”, you will find many stories.

I will do that. I added your post to my notes for the disabled forum/church so I’ll be sure to remember.

“I’d like to see sermons geared toward “aspies”. More logic, less hugging.”

I had not considered that! That I can do. Jonathan Edwards-style coming up.

Just because a certain compound has the same name, same atoms and even the same structure does not mean it is 100% the same. There are far more properties of matter that we are only beginning to test for. I’m sure there are countless others that we don’t even know of.

Different methods of synthesis and production have long been known to affect the actions of drugs even though they appear identical when tested.

I’m sure the same would not apply to sugar and other compounds found in foods. For example, the fructose synthesized by the agave plant is surely different from the fructose found in processed HFCS.

How different or how it affects us remains to be seen. It is more difficult to study and confirm because foods don’t have as profound and immediate effect as drugs.

“Oh, thank you! I just finished off a delicious tuna and sandwich-spread sandwich followed by tuna on crackers. I was just enjoying some hot cocoa and decided to check in on FR and saw this thread. I would say more but for some reason my attention is wandering...”

I made tuna salad today and had a sandwich for lunch and one for dinner. If the hot cocoa was a sweetened chocolate powder, it probably has high fructose in it. I think I have some without sugar, that would probably mean there is Splenda in it, another chemical, so I'll have some hot chocolate right now.

My name was Marcella when I started typing this but now I don't remember my name. Maybe I will remember it after the hot chocolate - or not.

Mine was cocoa, sugar and powdered milk... and was still hot before I started writing posts. :)

Just because a certain compound has the same name, same atoms and even the same structure does not mean it is 100% the same.

Yes, it does.

There are far more properties of matter that we are only beginning to test for.

No, there aren't.

I’m sure there are countless others that we don’t even know of.

Wrong, again. You're batting 1000.

Different methods of synthesis and production have long been known to affect the actions of drugs even though they appear identical when tested.

The differences found are accounted for by cofactors which mobilize or inhibit uptake, not because the same compound has different effects when produced by different processes.

I’m sure the same would not apply to sugar and other compounds found in foods.

It might, if what you were saying was anything but errant nonsense. But it isn't, because everything you've written in this post has no basis in science.

For example, the fructose synthesized by the agave plant is surely different from the fructose found in processed HFCS.

Nope. No difference. Fructose, is, by definition, fructose. Always is fructose and never is anything else, not even if made by little elves in a hollow tree.

How different or how it affects us remains to be seen. It is more difficult to study and confirm because foods don’t have as profound and immediate effect as drugs.

More nonsense. Some drugs have no effect on some people at all. Some foods kill some people almost instantly.

I'm sure this is going to be lost on you, but for the sake of people who are educable: A molecule is a molecule. When that molecule has the same number of atoms, the same kinds of atoms, and the same structure, it is physically indistinguishable from any other identical molecule. There is no physical test, no chemical experiment, and no biological process, including eating, drinking or snorting it that will produce a different effect.

I tremble for my country when I reflect that our scientific education has produced anyone who can make such a collection of completely false and nonsensical statements in a single post.

It would not be interesting in the least, because it would not show us anything of scientific value. The number of other uncontrolled factors in such a comparison would make it completely valueless.

“Amish have an autism rate of 1 per 15,000. Everyone on average is 1 per 150.”

A. There is probably a genetic trend against autism with them.

B. They don’t exactly run to the doctor for every little thing, so they are not over-diagnosing.

C. The children, esp. the boys, are running around outside, not expected to sit still and play politely with others most of the day.

D. They aren’t hyperachieving pushy types who overstimulate their kids from birth.

My FRiends, if you have an Asperger’s diagnosis in your family, I am not saying you have raised your child wrong. However, the giant different between Amish and general American culture must be acknowledged, as well as the genetic factor.

So why is autism so prevalent among the children of really smart people, many of whom are health food nuts? If it were HFCS, you’d think the trailer parks would be full of autistic kids, where sodas often get drunk at every meal. But that’s not where the uptick is.

I would say because the “smart people” keep their kids vaccinated more...

I think it is related to an auto-immune response with the “immune system accelerants” that they cut vaccines with now a days to make what used to be one shots worth of anti-viral factors be used to produce 10 or 100 shots. These immune simulators then cause the body’s immune system to be over sensitive and thus it starts attacking it’s own cells.

The hot chocolate I'm drinking right now, is non-sugar Swiss Miss. It has Sucolose in it, whatever mixture that is.

I am a Christian, since I was 10 years old. The problem with churches, is, they are made up of people. Churches always wanted me to do stuff within their organization and I would see the bickering, backstabbing, clicks that didn't like other clicks, etc.. and I wanted peace so I don't go anymore.

I am a dedicated member of Christ's church not on earth. I have studied the Bible all my life. My church when I was growing up thought for sure I would be a minister's wife one day. I was the church pianist for many years. Anyway, now I have church by myself and Jesus Christ in my house.

I was a psychological examiner for over 20 years and I only tested two children that I knew were autistic - that is before they re-defined autism and made it a catch all category. I would not want to test children or adults now as I couldn't go along with what has been done by changing the DSM symptoms for numerous disorders.

Yesterday it was mercury in momma’s fish sandwich, then vaccines, now corn syrup or lack of zinc, maybe it's cell phones or high power lines over head, GM foods, fluoride in the water, who knows except someone doing a “study”.

For the rest of us, just remember, if a child ever breaks eye contact they can be diagnosed as displaying symptoms of autism.
