STARVE THE BEAST: How to GO GALT and Avoid Paying Taxes (Without Moving or Quitting Your Job)
Reaganite Republican ^ | 08 November 2012 | Reaganite Republican

Posted on 11/08/2012 2:30:56 AM PST by Reaganite Republican

If the Obammunists are planning on building their paradise
with my wallet, they're in for some disappointment...

What exactly is 'Going Galt'?

Think of it as a supply-side Cloward-Piven strategy...

starve the beast, rather than milk-it-dry:

'Going Galt' doesn't simply mean getting angry. That would be "Going Postal." It means having righteous indignation at the injustice of a political system that bails out individuals and institutions for irresponsible behavior and at the expense of those like you who prosper through hard work and personal responsibly.

'Going Galt' means asking in the face of new taxes and government controls, "Why work at all?" "For whom am I working?" "Am I a slave?"

'Going Galt' means recognizing that you're being punished not for your vices but for your virtues.

'Going Galt' means recognizing that you have a moral right to your own life, the pursuit of your own happiness, and thus to the rewards you've earned with your labor.

'Going Galt' means recognizing that you deserve praise and honor for your achievements rather than damnation as "exploiters."

'Going Galt' means recognizing that you do not need to justify your life or wealth to your neighbors, "society," or politicians, or bureaucrats. They're yours, period!

'Going Galt' means recognizing that the needs of others do not give them a claim to your time, effort, and achievements.

'Going Galt' means shrugging off unearned guilt, refusing to support your own destroyers, refusing to give them what Ayn Rand termed "the sanction of the victim."

It means taking the moral high ground by explicitly rejecting as evil the premise of "self-sacrifice" that they sell to you as a virtue— in fact "self-sacrifice" is an invitation to suicide.

The dark skies of coming times

What would de Tocqueville make of our current fix?

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years...”

At least the US of A made it to 232 before the takers outvoted the makers... alas, here we are.

While I retain the opinion that the Obama era will end with major international strategic setbacks and comprehensive financial collapse, being 'right' will provide little solace as we watch the world's greatest nation fall to it's knees.

So why wait for the inevitable, when we can starve the beast, hasten that day of reckoning's arrival, and pick up the pieces from there? One FR commenter likened 'Going Galt' in-order to hasten the statists' demise to the difference between 'pulling the Band Aid off slowly... or just letting 'er rip' and getting it over with.

Yes, I'm a constitutionalist, a great believer in freedom and democracy, yet one that finds it hard to deny de Tocqueville's oft-proven wisdom above- the initial incarnation of American democracy may well be already gone.

But compared to a Chavez-like Obama 2nd term -one where Liberty vanishes and America is transformed into some sort of Soviet Union Lite- many would welcome a right-wing dictatorship, if the alternative was empowerment of leftist street mobs in the wake of an economic implosion. As typical of a nation in deep crisis, people will be open to whatever it takes to spare the country communist enslavement, foreign invasion, or comprehensive social collapse- well, politics has always been about choosing the lesser of two evils, eh.

The day the US Dollar dies will by itself mean the death of democracy in the USA -at least over the medium term- as we default to a barter society and Barack Obama is removed from office/resigns. No need to worry about Obama cancelling elections in 2016 to retain power when the dollar will never make it that far. Our feeble currency will surely crash under the weight of $20 TRILLION in debt, then it will get REAL ugly out there on the street, just like the mass tantrum we would have seen had Obama lost on Tuesday- but worse.

With democracy gone, only conservatives would ever have the desire to restore constitutional democracy, and OUR side has most the guns. The president has the power to declare Martial Law, yet the US military has been solidly opposed to Obama policy for some time now- if this administration drives the country over the fiscal clip, leading to chaos, there is little chance they'd cling to power (in the face of unrest) for long, and our military would never provide this goverment cold-blooded, Tiananmen Square level obedience, they are NOT bound to follow illegal orders, shoot US citizens, etc..

So while waiting for our Pinochet to arrive, here's what YOU can do to remove yourself from the Obama economy and starve this vile regime:

1. Buy used or new via secondary markets. Use Craigslist to find new stuff at less than retail... and you pay no taxes into the system.

2. Contribute to the secondary market by having a yard sale, you've probably got tons of junk you haven't even seen in years.

3. Forget status symbols and keeping-up-with-the-Jones'. Maybe you can afford that nice new car, but you’ll pay A TON of taxes on it. Find a lesser vehicle that makes you happy that feeds the beast less, perhaps one bartered from within the family.

4. Invest and hold. Avoid taxable capital gains until Jan 2017.

5. FIX YOUR STUFF instead of replacing it. So many people look at durable possessions as disposable. Take those pants to the tailor, or better yet, get a used sewing machine and fix them yourself. Find someone with a welding machine to fix that patio chair.

6. Maintain your possessions properly. Clean the dust out of your computer. Keep on top of the car, house, and tools.

7. Plant a garden and grow as much of your own food as possible... and don't forget spices in your window box, fresh is best anyway..

8. Enjoy life more simply. Choose a day at the park over an afternoon at the movies.  Attend a church cookout instead of going to Outback.

9. Speaking of things like the movies - stop going (Ed- I did years ago). Wait for the DVD and rent it for $1 at Redbox. If there is a cheaper option to do something, take that option.

Or - here’s a radical idea - buy used books dirt cheap and READ.

10. Set up two days a week to run errands. Run them all at once and efficiently instead of wasting money (and taxes) on fuel. If your workplace offers a work-from-home option, TAKE IT. (The 'green' Left will love this one, but we're talking about opportunities to avoid paying taxes into the system, while saving yourself some coin in the process) .

11. Create gifts instead of buying them.

12. Barter for goods and services under-the-table

13. Avoid all union shops, products, and services

14. If possible, move to a low-tax Red state

The day of reckoning is near...

I’m debating increasing my pretax contributions to retirement. I know the investments will likely be dropping over the next 4 years, but it should decrease my taxable income. That is if I am not mistaken in my thinking.

Another one from FReeper Mad Dawgg (via bolobaby):

“One of the best ways I’ve found to “starve the Beast” is to “legally” lower the amount the Gub’ment withholds from your paycheck.

Just take the maximum allowable deductions. Yes, it may mean you have to “pay” come tax time BUT if just 10% of the people who receive paychecks would do this it would put a severe crimp on the Washington “looter’s” cash flow! Just stash the extra cash somewhere and come tax time if you need it to pay Uncle Obama well then you have it.”

Don’t forget the library - Excellent source of free materials!! Reading, CD’s. everything.

It's not free. It costs taxes -- taxes everyone in this discussion are trying to avoid paying. Irony, thy name is Free Republic.

OK... back to lurking.

Knowing my daughter, I am sure she told people how she was voting.

Knowing the area where she works, it would have been preaching to the choir, literally!

What ever happened to "buy American"? Besides, Toyota make that most hated of vehicles, the lib-driven Prius!

Get a frigging clue. It ain't 1973 any more. The Toyota Camry has been the most American car for several years now-- both in parts content and assembly. Most so-called "imports" are more American than many big-3 sh@tboxes, and they aren't made by Bolshevik union thugs.

Rather than address the point of the comment, you are attempting to discredit the message by attacking me.

How typically liberal!

But....I know that you are a **professional** educator and would **never** use this debating tactic with your emotionally and educationally immature students. To do so would be emotional child abuse, especially since it would be coming from a person in power.

For as often as we see you use this on Free Republic, I am completely confident that you would never do this in your government owned and run, socialist-funded, single-payer, and godless classroom ( compulsory for all students whose parents can not pay the jizya needed for their escape.)

I love the facts:

1) I live in your head rent free 24/7/365.

2) You wake up with the night sweats calling my name.

3) I can still rely on the advice of Dr. Johnny fever: "It is bad luck to take advice from a crazy person."

BTW the topic was going Galt and avoid paying taxes, not whining about a system that you refuse to attempt to fix.

For working stiffs, like me, increase your withholding dependents by two or three and that’ll lessen the amount being sent to the coffers. You can't do anything about FICA or Medicare/Medicaid, but you can with your withholding.

I’m going to add a very strong word or two of caution regarding the above advice.

First of all the number of allowances from withholding you claim on your W-4 do not necessarily have anything to do with the number of dependents you can claim on your 1040. What you claim on your W-4 are withholding “allowances” not “dependents”. In other words, a person who is single with no dependents could claim any number of withholding allowances above the one for themselves depending on their personal tax situation, i.e. they might have a good number of allowable deductions (losses on investments, the purchase of a home, moving expenses, medical expenses, etc.) so that when they file their taxes for that tax year they are still not under withheld. Conversely a married person with four dependents might claim Married but withhold at the higher Single rate and 0 allowances if they have other income not related to employment, capital gains on investments or a second job.

When you file your taxes if you owe more than $1,000, you may be charged a penalty for underwithholding plus interest from the time the IRS determines the tax should have been withheld and paid. However, if your withholding from the previous year was equal or above your tax liability for the previous year, you would not be penalized under the “Safe Harbor” rule.

But if you miscalculate and cannot pay the taxes owed when you file your return on or before April 15th, the IRS will charge you additional penalties plus interest for every month the tax balance remains unpaid. I know, been there done that, not pretty.

Also be advised that if you knowingly file a fraudulent W-4, i.e. claim an unreasonable number of allowances or claim “Exempt” when you are not entitled to, you could face a fine up to $1,000 and a year in jail.

I am a certified payroll professional. I sometimes see employees claim well over 10 allowances (I’ve seen 99 allowances) on their W-4 or claim “Exempt” from federal withholding. Under the current law, I do not have to report this to the IRS as used to be the case. Unless the form is known to me to be fraudulent; i.e. they modify the form to take out or add language, give me a form other than the IRS form W-4, fail to sign it or verbally tell me they are filing a fraudulent form so as to evade paying taxes, I am to accept it without question. I will however “gently caution” anyone claiming over 10 allowances or claiming “Exempt” to be sure that they understand the consequences of under withholding, but as we in payroll say, “We are not the W-4 police” and if someone underwithholds, that’s on them not the employer. I'm also not a tax advisor and cannot give personal tax advice other than to ask, "are you sure this is what you want to do? I've found that sometimes people misread the W-4 instructions regarding claiming “Exempt” to think that if they didn’t owe taxes the previous year, they can claim “Exempt” when what that actually means is that they didn’t have to “pay” any taxes in the previous year (100% of all taxes withheld were refunded) and don’t expect to have to “pay” taxes in the current year – very rare except in such cases of part time employees under 18 who are fulltime students and some retirees, very low income earners. When I explain that, many employees have told me, "no, that's not what I want" and give me a corrected W-4.

Also be aware that if the IRS determines you have filed a fraudulent W-4 or have in a previous year, claimed too more allowances that you were not entitled to, the IRS may send your employer a “lock in letter” in which the IRS will determine the number of withholding exemptions allowed that stay in force until the employer receives a notice from the IRS that the “lock in” is no longer in effect.

One more word of caution: if the so called “Bush tax cuts” are left to expire, if you had more than $2,500 in FSA withholdings in the previous year or any number of the coming Fiscal Cliff/“Taxmageddon” provisions, whatever you had withheld in the previous year, even if your income and number of dependent have not changed, it may not be enough in 2013.

The best advice; with all considered, is to have only enough withheld as to neither owe taxes nor get a refund when you file your return. You don’t want to get a big refund (that’s the government getting an interest free loan on your money) but you need to be careful to not be underwithheld and end up owing penalty and interest over and above the tax. That takes some work and planning and may mean you might need to change your withholding allowances for 2013 and or change them based on changes in income or anticipated deductions during the year.

If you use Turbo Tax or H&R Block software to file your taxes, they have some good W-4 calculators. There are also other free calculators available on the web like paycheckcity.com or your employer’s payroll processors like ADP.

The topic is about starving the beast.

One of the best ways to do that is to remove one’s child from the government's owned and run, godless ( therefore religiously NON-neutral), socialist-funded, single-payer K-12 schools.

If there are fewer kids being indoctrinated in the government Marxist indoctrination camps, there is **more** opportunity to reduce taxes for all and to have money returned to the taxpayer's pocket.

Since you are evidently one of the smarter professional teachers, I am certain that you should be able to understand this simple economic principle. But....Maybe they don't teach basic economics in the nation's colleges of education. Given the rock bottom SAT scores of most education majors, economic principles may be a little much for them.

that you refuse to attempt to fix.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

It is impossible to fix a single-payer, compulsory-use, and socialist program. Programs such as this need to be abolished and privatized. Our Marxist controlled, government owned and run, socialist-funded, single-payer, and compulsory-use indoctrination camps ( misnamed “schools”) can not be reformed. We must begin the process of privatizing K-12 education.

One of the definitions of “Going Galt” is starving the beast. One of the most effective ways to do that is to remove one’s child from the government indoctrination camps. It has been estimated that it costs up to $17,000/per child/year. Whew! That's a **lot** of money that can be returned to our nation's citizens and businesses. This is money that can be invested in privately owned and run schools, as well as business and investments. This means **lots** of private sector jobs, the life-blood of the economy.

Since you are one of the smarter government teachers, I am certain you understand this principle. As for you colleagues?...Well!... They weren't the brightest bulbs on our nation's college campuses.
