Ninety-two million Americans are not in the work force—they don’t have jobs and they aren’t looking for jobs. These 92 million Americans aren’t just out of work—they are resigned to being out of work as a way of life. The ballooning numbers of Americans who are resigned to long-term joblessness inspired Roger L. Simon to suggest in a bleakly humorous piece over at PJ Media that Americans are going Galt: Tell all your “Objectivist” friends and the libertarian gang at Reason magazine to break out the champagne. Americans may have skipped the movie of Atlas Shrugged, nor have many read...

In 2007 I began writing The Market Ticker due to the outrageous conduct of various branches in the Administration and portions of the Capital Markets. Endemic fraud in the financial system that had generated unbridled and outrageous credit creation threatened the collapse of our entire economic system. The consequence of this should have been thousands of indictments, prosecutions and imprisonments -- of banking executives, of members of Congress, of various executive branch officers in various agencies and more.  The banking system should have been forced to match assets to liabilities and either put up the margin to back their bets or...

This past week, Rod posted a remarkable bleg over on the website of the American Conservative. I’ve written many times about how investors, entrepreneurs, small business owners and other successful people migrate from high-tax states to low-tax states. Well, the same thing happens internationally, as France’s greedy politicians are now learning. It’s a lot harder for Americans to escape our tax system, though, in part because of reprehensible exit taxes that are disturbingly reminiscent of some of the awful policies of past totalitarian regimes. But it still happens, and that’s a very damning indictment of Obamanomics and a worrying referendum on the future of the United States. Here are some blurbs from a recent Fortune article....

There has been a Utopia, Ohio, and there still exists a Utopia, Texas. In a country with a long history of creating idealistic communities, America may soon see another added into the mix — a city rooted in America’s past, or at least Glenn Beck’s version of it. Mr. Beck, the outspoken conservative U.S. media personality and commentator, this month outlined his proposition to create a self-sustaining city and theme park hybrid. Independence, USA represents a harkening back to a time of a simpler America and would be built on values he sees the country as now “going away from”...

The study, published today (Nov. 12) in the journal Trends in Genetics, argues that humans lost the evolutionary pressure to be smart once we started living in dense agricultural settlements several thousand years ago. Ten years ago, a white man from South Africa, one Kim du Toit, wrote an essay titled “Let Africa Sink.” It’s rather famous in the blogosphere in a sort of underground way. His thesis was essentially, we (Western Civilization) cannot save Africa. Life is cheap there. The mortality rate is a result of a perfect storm of natural disaster, human savagery, and unwitting complicity by Europeans that worsens the situation every time they try to help. As a result, death is treated more casually by Africans than by Westerners. I, and I suspect most Africans, am completely inured to reports...

So far, most of the discussion of Paul Ryan, the presumptive Republican nominee for vice president, has focused on his budget proposals. But Mr. Ryan is a man of many ideas, which would ordinarily be a good thing. In his case, however, most of those ideas appear to come from works of fiction, specifically Ayn Rand’s novel “Atlas Shrugged.” For those who somehow missed it when growing up, “Atlas Shrugged” is a fantasy in which the world’s productive people — the “job creators,” if you like — withdraw their services from an ungrateful society. “Get out of the way.” With this statement, John Galt articulated the simple and necessary policy solution to the disastrous centrally-planned economy in Atlas Shrugged. It’s also sage advice that President Obama should consider before he unveils his latest jobs plan before the Joint Session of Congress tonight. This advice is strikingly prescient as our nation’s economy moves ever-closer to mirroring the calamitous state of affairs that befell society in Rand’s novel. During his two and half years in office, Obama has crushed the labor market with a pro-statist agenda, which includes ObamaCare, the stimulus package, coziness to Big Labor,...

65 Ways That Everything That You Think That You Own Is Being Systematically Taken Away From YouApril 12, 2011 Everything that you own is slowly being taken away from you. It is being done purposely and it is being done by design. Many Americans like to think of themselves as "well off", but as will be demonstrated below, we don't "own" nearly as much as we think that we do. The truth is that most of us have to frantically run around accumulating wealth as rapidly as we can so that we can somehow stay ahead of the rate that...

"U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced Friday that $2.4 billion in high-speed rail funding intended for Florida will be sent to other states after the state Supreme Court upheld Gov. Rick Scott's decision to reject the money..." Why was the federal government trying to force this boondoggle on the Sunshine State? ... Who is John Galt? ... "Atlas Shrugged" is a lengthy parable about individualism and freedom. Set in the not-too-distant future, it depicts an America whose economy is falling apart under the weight of an overweening government run entirely by people with approximately the integrity, cognitive ability and humility...

Reposting a link to this surgeon made presentation on obamacare given the upcoming repeal vote. Since originally posted online it has been viewed over 11K times and was covered on several conservative blogs as well as previously on Freerepublic. Wondering about going galt. I have a car and a truck, both very old (early-to-mid 1990) probably each with book value less that $1k. I don't drive that much. Take the bus to work for the most part. I'm a renter - rent a house. I have cable/Internet, and land-line at home. I have a 'professional' private sector job, but I work from January to May for the Government. Things I already do: service my own vehicles, take the bus to work, keep thermostat at 58 degrees, small vegetable garden in summer. I have as much consumer crap as any...

"One surmises that the Democratic strategy is to rely on the American non-attention span, hoping that the people will just ‘kind of forget’ the whole mess in time for November. I was in attendance at the Moran health care forum featured at the mid-point. What a pile of hooey that was. Refusing elective surgery to lawyers? As strikes go, that would be kinda funny. Dr. Cox ends the video on such a positive, patriotic note that I am brought to tears. Well worth your time."
