Challenges of educating new immigrant students

I am sorry to report that we are not doing very well in teaching children newly immigrated to the United States. This is particularly true for Hispanic children, who account for over three-quarters of students enrolled in bilingual (ESL or ELL) programs. For the most part, a substantial learning gap exists between Anglo and African American students and their Hispanic counterparts.

We must provide new immigrant students with services that are both culturally and linguistically appropriate. These children are our future. Yet, the overview seen across the country shows we are not investing in this future – children are being left behind.

Why should it make a difference where a young kid sitting in a class, trying to understand and learn, was born? Or where his or her parents were born? It does. Language and culture can create barriers to success in education, particularly for young immigrant students.

In Tucson, the local school district that was targeted by the State Legislature and forced to shut down its Mexican American Studies Program. Please correct me if I am wrong , but this Mexican American Studies Program was it not, La Raza Studies that promotes the overthrow of the U.S. government ? This is what I recall when the debate over this was going on.

>>We must provide new immigrant students with services that are both culturally and linguistically appropriate.<<

WRONG!!

We need to ensure the only immigrants we allow into our borders speak our language, know our customs and laws, FOLLOW THOSE LAWS, and do not take a dime of any public service.

Unless and until we return to those standards, we will continue our headlong race into irrelevance and eventual oblivion.

First expel all the illegal students..second ship all the illegal parents back home..
NOw..we will have enough money to properly educate all our legal residents.

no one ask the simple question: DO YOU INTEND TO BECOME A CITIZEN?....the reason it’s not asked is because we all know the answer we’d get....hell no, why?

Very few illegal immigrants from Mexico have more than 8 years of education in Mexico. Many have only 4 years of education. When the kids are old enough to work the parents take their kids out of school. That is the Mexican culture. When their kids go to American schools do not expect the parents to help them with their homework. The parents can barely read and write in Spanish.

“...These children are our future. ...”

Since when?

They are not our children.

They are not citizens.

We owe them nothing if they have entered illegally...not even the cost of the fare to ship them back home.

Period.

(Although I concede that even with a language barrier they are very much more desirable and productive than the combined liberal arts faculties of the vast majority of our universities.)

The use of the word “appropriate” infuriates me. So they bust into our communities, make us pay for their kid’s “free” education, and teaching them the same as we teach our own kids isn’t appropriate?

Putting aside the issue of illegal aliens, when it comes to legal immigrants we're also doing something wrong. My father was 4 years old when he came to this country in 1912. He went to 12 years of public school, learned English, graduated, and became a successful tradesman. He served in WW II, held political office after the war, and sent his three sons to college. Why can't the schools of today do what the schools of a century ago did? When did we quit trying to make citizens out of immigrants?

When we took the three R’s out of school and replaced them with Sex Ed., affirmative action, focus on sports, political correctness, and emasculation of males. Along about the same time God was told to leave the premises.

Funny thing is man is conceited enough the think they can tell God what to do.

Challenges of educating new immigrant students

1. They don't speak English 2. They don't want to learn English 3. You can't insist they learn English cause that makes you a RAAAAACIST. 4. They think they are entitled because some activist told them white men stole everything from them, so they don't really feel inclined to learn ANYTHING. 5. The Democrat Party wants to keep them poor, isolated and in a ghetto to enhance their own political power.

That’s right. These kids grow up without a book in the house of any language. The parents are usually well-meaning but frankly, simple peasantry who send the kids off to The Big Building Where the Teachers Are, and that’s pretty much the extent of their contribution.

What’s particularly odd is that what is appropriate for white children works just fine for Asian kids too. In fact, it works even better on them. Weird, eh?

I wuz looking at a shinny new penny the other day thinking that the (new) design of the reverse was (at best) weak when it hit me.

I hope it catches on now that we are being ruled by Bronco, et. al.

Well some schools just decide to do away with advanced classes because it’s “not fair” that certain minorities aren’t “fairly represented”. Then they wonder why we don’t produce enough engineers, etc.
