"Every Man Should Carry a Pocket Knife"
artofmanliness.com ^ | Brett & Kate McKay

Posted on 01/04/2013 2:10:40 PM PST by virgil283

"1st Century Romans created the first folding pocket knife. They made for easy carrying for soldiers and other explorers on their journeys and conquests. However, as the use of sheathed knives became more popular, the use of pocket knives fell somewhat into disfavor......There are three common designs of pocket knives: the jack knife, the pen knife, and the multi-purpose knife. We’ll discuss the features and benefits of each one, in order to help you decide what kind of knife you should get.

A jack knife has a simple hinge at one end, and may have more than one blade. The jack knife is popular among hunters, fishermen, and campers.... A pen knife is hinged at both ends of the handle, and usually has two or three blades at each end. The pen knife was originally designed to cut or sharpen pen quills for writing. The pen knife is good if you want more than one type of blade. It’s also small and lightweight and won’t be noticeable in the pocket of dress clothes.....Multi-purpose knife. These are probably the most popular pocketknives. The Swiss Army knife and the Handyman are probably the most well known of the multi-purpose knives.....

I carry mine 24/7 and I'm on my second sheath after about about three years. It's an upgraded sheath I found on Amazon. I like knowing the blades as well, without looking, and I'm sure it only takes you a fraction of a second to lock one in place as it does me.

I've owned and carried a lot of knives in my life. None have ever been as useful or as durable as this LW I carry now. I use it for everything from hunting, fishing, IT work, to automotive and home repairs. I read one account where a Taliban met his 72 virgins at the point of one.

"a good carry knife is a girl’s best friend"...didn't mean to exclude the ladies with that title. You are right : a Swiss Army with scissors should be in every Moms purse...

I'm partial to sheath knives...

The Roach Belly, by Cold Steel, 4.5" blade is a lot of multipurpose knife for around $12-$15...

I'm looking hard as a future purchase from Windlass Steelcrafts...it makes me think of a modern scramaseax...the rubber grips gotta go tho...15.5" blade, about $50...

I have that same little tool. Mine doesn’t have a pen but it has a little light. The whole thing is the size of a credit card. It is a fun little thing.

If you go to Youtube and do a search on the knife model you are looking at then you can usually find videos showing how it operates.

Don’t blame you, those are nice knives and the price can’t be beat.

I gift myself with new knives all the time. Sometimes I even feel guilty but it doesn’t last long.

Not sure what makes a clam happy but I’m with you.

As a result of a disability I have only one good hand and I need your recommendations for a good knife that I can open one-handed quickly.

Thanks

I bought one of those Kershaw 1600’s from a store that was going out of business a while back. I think I paid about 20 bucks for it. It was mine right up to the moment Mrs L saw it.

Now it livesin her purse. I should have bought two.

LOL

Amazing how that works.

Appreciate that, thanks MC.

Have been lost 'window' shopping on Amazon for a half hour .. lol
Like the looks & price & comments, esp. re opening speed, of the Kershaw Volt II.

At $24 it might be irresistible (til the next one comes along ;-) . . .

Hey. I have a bunch of those. Did I gone you one?

My New CRKT is even more awesome. It’s the Crawford Kasper. I have four or five. As soon as get a couple more you can have one. Love this thing and I used it to get a root out my backyard last month. Hit it with a hammer and chopped through 3”s!!!

I always carry, especially right now. I don’t have enough leverage with my left arm to open some the gs bare handed. Bottles, packages. slice and dice!!!

I am sure you didn’t and a Swiss Army with scissors is always handy in a mom’s purse. Every mom should have one but to my thinking those are just handy things to have around. A good tool.

In addition to that handy little thing in my purse, I carry on my person either a Spyderco or a Kershaw. I also have a slick Smith & Wesson in my purse.

Just for grins and giggles, of course.
