Trail of fugitive ex-cop turns very cold in Big Bear
The Los Angeles Times ^ | February 8, 2013 | Phil Willon, Joseph Serna and Kenneth R. Weiss

The massive dragnet for a fugitive ex-cop continued Friday, with more than 100 officers conducting a fruitless search in the snowy, forested mountains around Big Bear Lake for an armed gunman who police say is on a vengeful rampage.

As the falling snow piled up, authorities pledged to continue the manhunt until they find Christopher Jordan Dorner, the 33-year-old former Los Angeles police officer suspected of killing three people, or stumble on definitive evidence that he is no longer in the area.

The trail has gone cold since Dorner's Nissan Titan pickup was found Thursday morning engulfed in flames on a U.S. Forest Service dirt road between the Bear Mountain and Snow Summit ski resorts. A set of footprints in the snow led away from the burned truck. It took more than five hours for experts to confirm that it was Dorner's vehicle and search parties to begin a methodical sweep of an area stretching across eight square miles.

While ski-masked SWAT teams went door-to-door checking hundreds of homes and shuttered cabins, other authorities fanned out on foot, slogging through fresh snow with search dogs. The teams combed backcountry and checked every shed, trash bin and barrel where the fugitive could hide. Dorner is described as African American, 6 feet tall and 270 pounds...

But, most killers don’t leave a long list of their intended victims.

He may be a fast food eater but he’s 270 pounds and pretty well put together. As a former gym owner I’m thinking steroids or HGH. Which may explain his paranoia as well.

My guess is he will be found dead of exposure. I suppose anything is possible but that is the most likely ending.

As someone who is no stranger to gyms, that crossed my mind, as well.

So far, three innocent people in two different pickup trucks have been shot up.
Neither pickup matched the description of the perp's. Different color too.

And why in the world do SWAT teams have to wear masks to search door-to-door?

Why does any criminal wear a mask?

With all due respect, that would have to be a heck of a friend. Not to mention a charge of aiding and abetting a fugitive, we’ve seen what happened to a truck and it’s occupants (Torrance) for merely resembling this vehicle. To drive the actual vehicle? WOW, that would be like a kamikaze pilot who was able to ditch his plane into the sea, and somehow make it out, alive. My humble opinion, as well. Thanks.

I’m thinking he offed himself in a snowbank, not to be discovered until spring thaw. He has accepted the fact that he will not end this ‘mission’ alive, he has brought publicity upon LAPD’s corrupt practices, hurt the guy he most wanted (Father Quan), and instilled terror in the police. If terrorizing them was his goal, they are guaranteed to be on edge, for weeks, if my humble hypothesis is true. Just my 2 cents, of course. Thanks.

Dorner could have left the truck there himself a while ago, with a timed incendiary device.

This guy has been clever so far, so I doubt he was stupid enough to leave tracks leading into the woods unless that was exactly where he would NOT be when they searched the area.

I’m with you. He’s melted into background of a city somewhere. Probably has one or more prearranged “safe houses” to hide & plan his next move.

I agree that there was a device that probably allowed time to depart the scene. It couldn’t have been too long a period of time, however, as it was supposedly the same vehicle he was using when he allegedly shot the cops in Riverside County, earlier that same day. Thanks.

Soon he’ll set off another diversion in another remote location, and the LAPD will bite yet again.

Excellent suggestion.

And does it with one shot.

Actually, I hope it takes multiple 30 round mags until the SOB is put down for good.
