we've slowly accumulated a stock of pretty much everything one buys at a store from dry and canned food stuffs, to other goods like storage bags, wrapping paper, soap, laundry detergent, cleaners, tooth brushes, paper products, and so on and on. We've really gone out of our way to identify everything that might be applicable, even if they are items we use only irregularly. When we run out of something, we check storage, pull out another one if we have it, and add it to the shopping list - so that when we go shopping, we are mostly replenishing storage and not stuff in current use.

>>One short term fix, especially if your apartment has a balcony and your apartment manager
allows it, is a grill’s propane tank fitted with a cooking grill attachment<<

When the Northridge Quake hit I used my camp stove. I had several gallons of fuel, which could have lasted about a month.

Fortunately, gas and electric were back on in a day or so.

Note Ferfal's words about water storage.

I took Marcella's advice and have been buying the Ozarka 1 gal stackable water. They take up very little space, stacked up, in the corner of a room.

I wish Marcella lived in my neighborhood. The problem is I wouldn’t know it if she or one of her skill-set and temperament twins did.

Clorox makes a great antiseptic but the chlorine slowly evaporates from solution. I bought a few packages of “Pool Shock” at Walmart and it releases chlorine when dissolved in water. I also keep a very small amount in a closed plastic bottle near the toilet and sprinkle about 1/2 teaspoon after cleaning. It kills the mold. Much cheaper per dose than packaged bowl cleaners.

I looked at your about page and no state is listed. What state are you in?

Large phone books are backup toilet paper. A relative of mine saw big phone books stacked on a shelf under a sink and said we could throw those away. I looked at him and said, “Toilet Paper” and he rolled his eyes and closed the cdabinet door. He and his wife think I’m nuts. They have nothing stored at all. He’d have to come here if the worst happened and would know at least I have toilet paper in a book.

“Note Ferfal’s words about water storage.”

If water goes away, many millions will die as it takes so much to keep a body living. And, if it's all used to drink, and there is no cleaning of bodies or surfaces, infection will make them die sooner. Water is number one to stay alive and healthy.

I don't think you have talked about your water sources. Do you live near a body of water? I assume you have water purifiers.

I have a 5gl bucket stuffed full of Telephone books and a snap on toilet seat lid ... just because I can, now. The bucket and the Phone Books were free, the Snap on lid / seat was supposed to be a gag gift from a friend ... works for me. TP is bulky but it fits under the bed, I have a bunch of it.

Water is a real and serious worry for me. It is so serious it almost out ways everything on the side that that says bug in. The river here will be a ‘hunting ground’ of zombies and or predators, that is if the banks aren’t ablaze from careless fires. Even then I think that sooner or later the water will be unusable even if you can get to it especially in the dry season which is most of the year here.

“The river here will be a ‘hunting ground’ of zombies and or predators,...”

I'm glad you brought that up. Most people think they can just get to a river or lake and they will be fine - plenty of water and fish and they can just camp by the water. People, good and bad, with nothing, which would be most people, will head toward bodies of water. The banks of waterways will be killing fields. I used to live with a lake nearly in the back yard and thought it was a dangerous place to live. Even though it was a gated community, nothing prevented people coming in by boat or anything that floated.

Your best bet is water barrels on every downspout. You may have some great contraption that holds rainwater like a huge tank or something. If you have a swimming pool that would be a great collector but you don't sound like the kind of person who would have a pool for frolicking and fun. I think you do have now some kind of container to put in bathtubs and filling for the first bit of trouble. Maybe you have some water in bottles.

Large amounts of water are necessary and so are water purifiers. My Big Becky will make clean water out of water in a ditch.

Any water is usable if you distill it. I have a coil of copper tubing to insert into my large rocket stove https://picasaweb.google.com/109188381423929573522/MyLargeHomeBuiltRocketStove. I haven’t checked it for, output yet, but it should supply enough drinking water for five or six people.
