According to the police and fire department of Japan, more than 53 thousand people have been hospitalized with heat stroke since the end of May in the country. The number of lethal outcomes has reached 338.
Of these, 263 people (78 percent) are over 60 years of age. 75 percent were found in the premises outfitted with air conditioning systems, although they were not used. Meteorological services reported that in some parts of Japan, temperatures will be preserved on the level of 35 degrees Centigrade before the end of the week.

380 dollar electric bill for me last month.. and i have it set to 77..
Wow that electric bill is high. Last month during a heat wave in Beijing my electric bill was about $30 US dollars. I had the thermostat at 70.
I was in Japan on business a few times back when liberals were still fretting about a new ice age, and even then, the Japanese refused to use the air conditioning that they already had. In hot weather, their offices were like saunas.
This unwillingness to use A/C is nothing new with the Japanese. They seem to have an entirely different standard of personal comfort than we do.
The Chinese act goofy too about climate-controlled offices. Last summer, I made sure the air conditioner stayed on in the office and a group of women, out of protest, dressed up wearing winter coats and scarves. I called them eskimoes. But these same eskimoes who freaked out about air conditioning acted the opposite when the heat in the office got turned on in the dead of winter. They insisted on opening all the windows even when it -10 F outside. And guess what, they didn’t wear coats in the office. Many Chinese would drink boiling water in the summer and room temperature water in the winter. I was curious about these actions and apparently there’s some Chinese tale that airconditioning and heating causes sickness if the windows are closed.
I live in Japan ..Have a house in the country in the mountains , not air conditioned , and a music studio next to the the main house , which is . Electric bill for July was $ 60 . NOt bad .
Sounds reasonable. But do you get bored living away from an urban area?
I know a Chinese-American lady who won’t use soap for washing clothes, dishes, or herself, maintaining that it’s harmful. I know it may not be because she’s Chinese but merely crazy.
Sometimes ...But bus/train transportation is superb so I can be in the a big city like Kumamoto or Fukuoka within 2 hours . I pay $ 40 a year for the bus to and from Fukuoka and can use it as many times as I wish in 1 year . Great deal . BTW - my water ( pure ) bill per month is $ 15 .

It’s too bad the car makers knuckled in to the insurance companies and got rid of the corner vent windows that we used to have on every car. You didn’t need A/C with a vent window. It would scoop the air and blast it through the vehicle interior. The insurance companies targeted the vent windows by claiming that they made the car too easy to steal. Now you have to have A/C to survive.

Tokyo is as regular as you want it to be. If you like to party, party. I’m at a gig right now (as usual) and we are using lots of energy and smoking and drinking and having fun. This article has no relation to myself or the people I hang out with. Its just a stupid hit piece. The only time people done use the air conditioner is to simply save a little cash, just like the rest of the world. Some folks were susceptible and died. End of story.
That’s crazy, not a Chinese thing. One good thing about living in the Asia-Pacific region is that you never have to worry about smelling body odor. But when I visited Malayia 10 years ago, that’s another story. The Chinese Malay were clean but others? Well, ...
You know many newer cars run the A/C compressor when you turn the defroster on. It does two things. It dries the air and it helps to keep the A/C compressor lubricated in the winter, when you're not using it to cool the car. I have two cars over 100,000 miles. Neither of them suffer from running the A/C at start-up.
When I was stationed in Korea, it was a superstition there that leaving a fan on in a room with windows and doors closed would suck the air out of a room.
So the 100 million cars running around like that in the US will die a premature death? Really??
Unnecessary. But waiting to hit the button for 20-30 seconds as the oil pressure builds is always a good idea, as is not racing the engine during the same interval.
We put a floor fan on for our dog. He parks himself in front of it and just sleeps away the hot part of the day. He knows all about a/c and will elect to sleep in the bedroom on very hot nights when we have the portable a/c running and he will sometimes, but not always, follow us upstairs to the rooms we keep cool for the computers. We move the portable a/c into the room my husband uses when he has clients on hot days. We have a/c in our shop building, but if we don’t have to work there on a hot day, we just don’t. Otherwise, we use ceiling fans, floor fans and just stay in the areas with the best ventilation, overhanging eaves and a ceiling fan. Or we spend the day in the pool, if at all possible.
We always have a/c on in the vehicles because the dog is with us. We will take turns staying in the car so we can leave the a/c on for him. He knows where all the vents are and gets close to them until he cools down, then he retreats a bit. You can watch his tongue retreat back into his mouth and his breathing slow down as he reaches a comfortable temperature.
The cat loves the heat and avoids the a/c.
We only use limited a/c when it goes above 85 with high humidity. I love a/c and only ration it due to the cost.
Yeah, I can generally handle the 90s here in the dry heat as long as I’m feeling good otherwise, but go somewhere with humidity and 85 floors me.
when I was growing up they hadn’t invented air conditioning and no one died!!!
In Sept. and Oct. with temperatures over 100 they didn’t cancel school ot football practice, they just opened the windows and you sweat!
People today are a bunch of spoiled pussies!
