A group of Democrats are urging Walmart to follow CVS Caremark and discontinue selling tobacco products.
The seven Democrats said Walmart, the nations biggest retailer, is also the nations biggest seller of cigarettes.
We recognize the legality of selling and profiting from tobacco products; however, Walmarts position as the nations largest retailer of any kind puts your company in a unique position to contribute to the health and well-being of all Americans< the Democrats said in a letter to the company. The letters signatories included Sen. Dick Durbin (Ill.), the number two Democrat in the Senate.
The letter stats that three quarters of adult smokers want to quit, and quotes former Walmart CEO Lee Scott as saying a tremendous number of Walmart shoppers smoke.
The letter was also signed by Sens. Tom Harkin (Iowa), Barbara Boxer (Calif.), John Rockefeller (W.Va.), Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio) and Richard Blumenthal (Conn.).

Big Business leftists fighting with professional leftist complainers..
I love it!
True, but sometimes exercises in futility can be fun. Who am I to judge?
exactly
if im gonna lose my ass it int gonna be in a walmrt
We live in the age of cave.
I’m predicting, like every other entity, Wal-Mart will cave to the wishes of the left’s political correctness.
And commerce shall grind to a halt as numerous interstates are blockaded. :-)
HA!
As I recall, Hitler hated smoking too.
Well done!
but sudafed?.....hand over your drivers license and if regular cigs?......we'd rather have you smoke pot...(iows, we've already gotten as much extortion money out of the cigarette companies as we can)
I really don’t see many people buying smokes at Walmart.
As an ex-smoker, I usually just bypass that one single cash register out of the 36 others that they have. (of which maybe 4-5 are open)
Why walk 500 feet across a parking lot to stand in line for 15 minutes to buy the same thing you can buy at the gas station across the street that sells at the same State Minimum price?
if i was walmart i’d say we’ll stop selling cigarettes when you get planned parenthood, the number one killer of babies in america, to stop doing abortions, even though it’s legal.
The shorter life-span of cigarette smokers should be seen as a benefit to the Leftist cigarette haters. They want population reduction and cigarettes should be the way to get it. Each person that dies from cigarette smoke is one less person to spend money keeping them alive in a nursing home. That gives them more money to live on the government without having to work.
Dick Durbin is a busy body troll and sadly a senator from my home state of Illinoisistan. I can’t stand him.
Now WHERE might they be purchasing said smokes?
My guess is some local grocery or drugstore.
NOT in some dingy crime ridden DC neighborhood convenience store.
The bad publicity would be horrendous if the lackey was robbed while getting Prezzy's smokes.
Same deal happened in Germany about a decade ago. Big increase in cigarette tax was to occur....in two waves. Around nine months into first wave....the tax revenue guys get into an emergency meeting. Their anticipated collection rate had gone down by thirty to forty percent. Fair amount of money they were “missing”. Customs guys stand up in the same meeting and note that they were busting tons of people bringing illegal non-taxed smokes into the country. The dimwit Greens health minister felt this tax thing was a big success because smokes sales were rapidly decreasing around Germany.
Chancellor called big meeting, and cancelled the second wave of the tax increase entirely. As of today...recovery has not occurred, and that tax revenue lost is still a big deal.
The last thing you’d want to do as a gov’t....is lose cigarette sales. My humble guess is that the Dem’s would like to stir the pot and get more lobbyists to visit them and toss money into the campaign pot for November 2014. They need big cash this season.
Only when it is the “correct” choice ala the one THEY agree with.
Ha, glad to hear I’m not the only one. I’m forced to walk through their cloud of smoke if I’m unfortunate enough to arrive when they’re on break. I find myself breathing through my nose and scowling because just the aroma reminds me of what I’m missing...makes me crave one.
The Norwegians did a 20 year study, comparing the costs of smokers, over-weight people and “healthy” people. The smokers cost the system the least. They also did not get lung cancer at rates currently stated. In fact, the rate of lung cancer for smokers is almost half the rate of those who never smoked. Large people cost the system more than smokers. The healthy ones who never smoked, ate the perfect diet and all that rot? They cost the most. They were more apt to run to a doc for the smallest thing, take “preventative” drugs, etc. WHO and other agencies went bonkers, frothing at the mouth over the results.
My great-grammie smoked all her life. She died at age 94. Not related to smoking, she was very old. Insurance says I will die around age 93, 94 if I quit smoking.
I am 54. Every decade, I got a check-up. My lung capacity is better than those who never smoked. I have no wrinkles, though I get crinkles around the eyes when I smile. My vitals are better than most young adults. I am on no medication of any sort. Neither is my husband. No workout, or any other trendy actions.
We do grow our own, mostly. We supplement with additive-free and tubes that are untreated. I do not know if that, or that we eat a high-protein organic diet with real fats, and other real food is why?
No matter. I like my smoke. I do not care what others think. We do not smoke inside. We have not done so for over 30 years. I like a clean house. I do not want to inflict our smoke on the grandsons or nonsmoking family and friends. We do smoke in our car. If a non-smoker, ( any child, of course), is in the car, we wait until we stop and smoke out of their way.
I am not justifying my smoking. I am not giving it up, even if it means a “speak-easy” sort of place will be the only way to have one. I highly doubt the gummits will cut off their cash cow. Or the medical society who gets a huge cut from the gummit.
Debbi.
When smoking is outlawed in casinos’, then it’ll be gettin to the nut. Seriously, casino managers should be mildly concerned about smokers using their portable O2 for ashtrays.
