Excellent observation. I recently picked up the same theme reading biographies of Grover Cleveland and James Garfield. It’s amazing how conservative the NY Times and other media outlets used to be. There really wasn’t such thing as a progressive in the U.S. back then.
I will help spread it around as well...emailing it to folks I know who are pro-2nd Amendment and in turn...

It doesn’t sound like we’re really disagreeing since the point of reference cited is Woodrow Wilson. I’ll mention Grover Cleveland again, who was a Democrat. He was a true limited government conservative, probably more so than any Republican president that came after him except for Calvin Coolidge. Maybe Cleveland was an outlier.

Got it - I must not have been clear about my point of reference in the original comment, which was late 1800s (the time of Cleveland) instead of the time of the publication of the cartoon posted by marktwain. There were definitely progressives in the 1930s but not really in any meaningful numbers before the early 1900s. I agree that Wilson is more or less the right point of reference for the rise of progressivism, though Teddy would also be appropriate.
