Facebook Launches NSA-Style Auto-Eavesdropping Feature
ZeroHedge ^ | 5/21/2014 | Tyler Durden

I hope there are people who love the feature and post more," says Facebook's product manager excitedly about the new feature they just added. We suspect people will not... As The WSJ reports, starting Wednesday, the app has the ability to recognize music and television shows playing in the vicinity of users. Read that again... 'in the vicinity of users'. In other words, Facebook is unveiling its own NSA-style eavesdropping feature (on you and all your friends). Don't worry though... even if users decide not to share what they’re hearing or watching, Facebook will hold onto the data in anonymous form, keeping tabs on how many users watched particular shows. Sound familiar?

We're listening...

We are fans of Person of Interest.

One of the lead roles is the character, Harold Finch. He is a reclusive billionaire software engineer, who built a machine that predicts future crimes and outputs either the victim’s or perpetrator’s Social Security number.

In one of the shows, Finch tells about how difficult it was to get broad scale data and data mining on individual people until the social media sites become popular. Then, it became too easy as people volunteered and posted their private and personal data on the sites.

Social media, especially Facebook, is evil. This stunt is another nail in social media’s coffin. It will destroy itself.

In the mean time, if you must, turn off your computer’s camera and microphone.

I use desktop with no mic input. When I want to record I connect a mixer via firewire.

My desktop has a usb camera which is unplugged except when I need it. My laptop has black electrical tape over the camera. At my old employer about four years ago I was working at my desk and noticed one day the little light next to the camera was on. I’ve covered built in cameras ever since.

This should bring about the same response as when Microsoft insisted on forcing its users to let the XBox cameras spy on them constantly.

Does the black electrical tape shutoff the microphone? You can always, with Windows, go into the Device Manager and disable the device. Then reenable it when you want to use it.

I suspect they can be turned back on remotely, as easily as you turn them off.

No,the tape is just for the camera. I feel safer knowing that it is physically stopped from working rather than through software. I’m too concerned about someone overriding or resetting the software. When that tape is over the camera, there are no worries whatsoever.

Only if the computer has built-in audio/video.

So they access parts of the user’s computer without the user’s consent. If they can do it, then NSA is already doing it.
